I have been planning on buying an RV this coming winter and heading South too. Waiting to get to Death Valley to buy an RV sounds risky because even if someone wants to sell their RV you are not sure what condition it is in.
Late 30-something, college-educated (Spanish and culinary degrees), married, 0 kids...both my husband and myself looking for an adventure and challenge outside the corporate 8-5 office jobs for at least a couple of years. We spent time in Death Valley last July and absolutely fell in love with the place. Both want to spend time in Alaska, too...
I love photography, cooking/baking and am currently learning how to knit!
When you crewed, were you able to work a p/t position if you wanted to? Was the business level sufficient enough to allow saving decent $$$? Did you need to get US Sailing certified? Would you try a trans-pacific or Trans-atlantic on a 30" sailboat? What brand would be an inexpensive yet strong blue-water boat. Oh, I could pick your mind... :0) Anything on planet Earth you can tell me about sailing would be much appreciated. Gracias
I am thinking of taking sailing lessons this summer with the goal of eventually buying a single-hand blue water boat for long-distance cruising (New Zealand, Micronesia, and eventually Alaska where I will settle).
Can you throw me any info on being crew? Does a person make a decent living? Would it even help in achieving those goals? I have friends in Alaska who are live-aboards and it seems to be an excellent way to travel and live inexpensively at the same time. Thanx for any help :0)
