Interesting insights about the recession's affect on seasonal jobs this summer on the Jersey Shore

Worth a read - Copied from the NY Times

POINT PLEASANT, N.J. — As the unemployment rate climbed this spring, thousands of recently laid-off workers descended upon the resort communities along the Jersey Shore looking for summer work, hoping for an infusion of cash and a brief respite from job hunting.

But for many of the applicants who are older and have extensive résumés, finding work along the boardwalk can be as elusive as winning one of those deceptively easy-looking ring toss games.

Veterans Green Corps comes online with CoolWorks

I had the chance to talk to Amy Foss, Director of Operations for the Southwest Conservation Corps, about the Veterans Green Corps. These are great opportunities for veterans who have recently returned from overseas. Below are Amy's answers to some of my questions. Please spread the word about these opportunities to any veterans you know!

What is Veterans Green Corps?
Veterans Green Jobs (VGJ) has combined efforts with the Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) to create Veterans Green Corps… Continue

Elkins Resort - Consider it for next summer

I'm road trippin it this week, and Elkins Resort on Priest Lake in northern Idaho has been one of our stops. I love going to employers' places, laying low for the first day, not letting anyone know who I am. This way I can check out the vibe on the down low. ;} Shhhh, don't tell. I do this for you guys.
I came away from Elkins thinking - what a great place to spend the summer.

From the Montana campaign trail

Well, here it is. The day we've been working for. We'll never know if we were able to sway any of those undecideds we've talked to over the last two months, but we did our best, and in the process learned a lot about ourselves and a whole lot about Barack Obama and his vision and plan for our country. I hope, at the end of the day, or by mid-week, the decision will be made, and he'll be our nominee. I'm looking forward to his debates with McCain.

Today we'll do more Get Out the Vote. We have li… Continue

Yes...home of the infamous Laid Back Larry's (and I can't wait to tell them you said that...they will love it)! Kanab is a great place to live. I absolutely love it here. There is beautiful scenery every way you turn, it's close to Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell... I'm a little spoiled now, I think!

hello kathi. it was nice meeting you and your coolworks crew up at yellowstone. it is such an uplifting site where new lives can be just a click away. i love browsing the new jobs and make believing my life over again in them. mostly i end up cringing and being thankful i have the gig at the firehole. anyways i felt i owed it to you all to show and am disappointed more people who found their job through you didnt show up to say thanks.
i wont be applying for the ranch job south of tuscon. i like the food and private room, but there is very little for a waiter to do in buffet style meals. i am not nearly as attracted to the horse culture too as i am the fly fishing or ski. thanks for the heads up though. if you or your crew are in the area of west yellowstone and want a great place to crash, wake up and fly fish or canoe let me know. im in a big cabin with three unused rooms on 1000 acres in a national forest next to a lake and probably wont have any housemates until august.
peace be unto you

Yes Kathi,

I got your email and went in and got my resume running on my work computer. I had to set the cookie security lower on my laptop for it to work.

Thanks for all your help.

Hello Kathi, No I have decided not to work this summer. I wanted to make some trips with my family. Alaska trip is from May 23rd to May 30. I am so looking forward to it!! When I return from Alaska I will be home a week and then make my first trip to New York City with one of my daughters. (The other two will be with me in Alaska.) I also have 5 grandchildren to spend some time with and then a trip planned in October to Tennessee with my sister and brother-in-law. I have told them all that I do plan to pursue work next summer and I will not be planning trips and they will just have to come see me wherever I end up. I will be glad to post some pictures upon my return.

I'm leaving the KL on May 5th. Flying from Phoenix to Vegas for a couple of nights. Then flying to LA and catching a train to Seattle. I like trying to get a long distance train in somewhere. I'm staying in Seattle for a couple of nights. I'm planning on meeting Kari on a Coffee Crawl tour there. Then I found this flight from Seattle that stops in Juneau, Yakutat, and Cordova before Anchorage. It looked more interesting than a direct. I'll stay in Anchorage for a couple of days. I start at Sheep Mountain on the 13th.
