I just read a blurb in the AAA Via Magazine that said the Ken Burns series, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" is going to be on PBS in a six-episode series beginning September 27th. I'm really looking forward to it.

Profile Information

Hometown:
California
About Me:
Freelance Graphic Artist and Photographer who occasionally likes to visit and work in the National Parks. :)
Favorite Seasonal Job:
This is hard to say - I've had a few that I've really loved and even the bad ones had their good bits about them. For example I didn't like working for Xanterra - the company isn't so hot but I met some of the best people I've ever known in my life while I was there. So ... it's all sort of hit and miss with these things.
Where have you lived and worked?
Grand Canyon, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, Alaska.
Dream Job:
Some sort of graphic design for a park or resort - maybe running a small newspaper or something along those lines for a park community.

Ken Burns on the National Parks

I haven't been around these parts in quite a while - alas, I haven't been to any parks or "great places" this year as I had some health issues (nothing serious but had to have surgery.) Maybe next year!

I imagine some of you may already know about this but just in case I thought I'd post about something I got via e-mail today in care of the National Park's Foundation website. It seems Ken Burns, the guy who has created award winning documentaries about various topics in American History (probab… Continue

Professional work at the parks?

I'm wondering if any of you out there would have some advice for me in regard to a job search. I've been doing the seasonal travel work on and off for quite some time now and I really enjoy working in various national parks and similar type places.

However I've also been taking a lot of design/graphics classes and have done some freelance work on and off. Right now I'm wondering - does anyone know if any graphics positions ever open up at various resorts or do most of them outsource that sort o… Continue

Grand Canyon

I missed the photo contest! I've been really busy with work, school and some freelance stuff and I just forgot to upload my pictures here. Oh well.

I'll be going to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this summer - I was going to go to Alaska but a family member has had some serious health problems and I decided I needed to be within driving distance if - Heaven forbid - something major happens and I need to come home. Hopefully that won't happen but better safe than sorry. In any case I'm lookin… Continue

I'm home

Over half a million people have been evacuated - they're calling today 'Return Day' because about half of that number, myself included, are being allowed back into their homes. I drove down my street and took in the wind damage and just felt relieved it wasn't fire damage.

The amount of devastation around me is so tragic. All of the normal irritations of life - you know when you're annoyed at some guy on the road who cuts you off, or when some store clerk is rude to you

Housing question and general ramblings ...

Wow, summer is almost over and I'm glad for it. I hate heat and humidity and am soo ready for Autumn.

So anyway ... Does anyone know of a company that provides housing but lets you choose to live alone? I don't actually mind living in a dorm but I really don't want to deal with sharing a dorm room with a stranger. Been there, done that. It's okay for a while but at my age (I'm in my 30's) I'd really like my privacy up front. From what I'm finding it looks as if most places will provide 'single… Continue

Oh forgot at first when Dan said he wasn't going to come back they were looking at several people and originally I guess it was going to be Richard Wiand the housekeeping Manager, but I guess he either decided not to since then or they decided he didn't fit because Mike is now dealing with the hiring. I'm actually relieved because when I worked as security Richard was so much trouble.

Terri and Dan aren't coming back this year. Neither is Debbi and Ron and there spouses. Your not the only one that had it out with Terri. After you left towards the end of the season Terri and I had it out right there in the back of the gift shop and she tried taking out to the circle right at the shuttle stop, by confronting me. I bluntly told her that it was not the time nor the place to do that with all the guest around that if she had further choice words for me it could wait untill we were in private. I then went and told Dan that his wife tried to continue the argument right in public and I didn't appreciate it. They had no problem with hirring me back actually. And at the end Terri and I ended up getting along just fine. go figure. You should look into it. Mike said there changing a lot around this summer to make it better and ya know no one had a bad word about you at all. Everyone kept actually saying they missed you.

Hi Lea,

Thanks for understanding. I meant for that to go to my HR Share friends, but it went to everyone. Got to love the web.

Actually the discussion started here on My Cool Works and I was just sharing the best comments with the HR peeps to help them.
