I Fried my Uniform in the Hotel Dryer! LOL

I got called in last night at one am. The new night auditor called me crying that the computers had crashed and technical support wasn't answering. I knew I was scheduled to work at 6 am so I grabbed my uniform which was in the washer. Threw it into a Wal-Mart bag ..thinking if I'm running late I'll just dry it at work. Well I knew the commericial dryers get really hot but I didn't realize HOW HOT. I put my polyester black pants and my uniform vest into the dryer for FIVE minutes and fried them… Continue

Going to the sun

“The only man who makes no mistakes is the man who never does anything.”

~Teddy Roosevelt

“I think I’m about ready to get out of here again.” “It’s about time. I figured I’d been hearing that six or seven months ago.” “I just got to go.” “I know; it’s who you are, and who you’ll always be.” “Mom, I’m 32 years old.” “So what. You think you’re dad wouldn’t go with you if he could? You get it honest and never let anyone tell you different.”

“If you get a call… Continue

Gusty Winds May Exist

....and other roadside oddities.

I have left Florida behind. Since over-baking myself on the beach I have spent three days in decreasing temperatures, snow, ice and freezing fog.

As I travel westward, in the boredom of concentrating on the Interstate lane ahead of me, I see only brief glimpses of the land I pass through. Some much more brief than others: the 50’-100’ limited vision of freezing fog masked the sight of everything but the… Continue

BAD Friday the 13th READY TO LEAVE HERE

I am so ready to leave my job and this god forsaken apartment. I have precious little in the world and I guess it's just as well since it all seems so temporary right now. I got a bunch of stuff stolen from my apartment and I am feeling a little violated right now. Worst is I know it was a friend of my nephews but can't really prove it. It has only shored up my idea of getting rid of all my world belongings and hitting the road. Worst part is that my feelings are hurt and I guess that probably… Continue

My Packing List

Good thing I am driving. I mean, how do you get all this stuff into two carry-ons?

Ok, I would pay the $15 airline surcharge to get a 50 pound bag of toys to Yellowstone;but the universe has deemed that I do not have to.

A good start:

Passport / Checkbook / Credit Cards / Paper& Envelopes

Laptop w/equipment / Camera w/equipment

Mp3 player / Dvds & CDs / Alarm clock, electric & battery

Sunglasses/ reading… Continue

Fairbanks Update

So I deleted my blog about Gwins with requests from those who manage this website. Trust me when I say I had NO IDEA that it would have become what it did. I still stand firm on my original intent on writing the post and am thankful for those here who supported my honesty. I never did see any of the "hurtful" posts and plead those who did leave nasty comments steer clear from my site.

On another note, I thought I would update my life in Alaska to create a happier vibe. I have been living… Continue

Only Three Weeks Until Lift Off

Over the last few weeks my emotions have ranged from overwhelming excitement to gut wrenching anxiety. Right now all I can think is thank God I only have three weeks left to live in this soulless place! I have been here 8 months and in that time the water department project across the street has become more and more invasive. The huff and blow of the construction equipment has become unbearable. The endless hammering and grinding of the construction crew from dawn until dusk grates on my last… Continue

Bragging on the Florida Winter

Today’s episode of my journey westward was a nice short low mileage day. I left my friend Marti’s on a cold foggy late winter morning clad in wool socks, jeans and a sweater. By noon, the Florida winter sun was out in full force. Having a couple of hours to spare until my friend MaryBeth finished work, I was in a bikini basking on the beautiful undeveloped white sugar sand beach at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin. By 2pm I was burnt from the sun,… Continue

Day In...Day Out (or: eh, Tenderloin again)

I just realized my random-date update was a couple of days ago. Me bad. So I'll throw a couple in...maybe a little less details though. Sorry, but I'll through in another date, May 1, it's not so random so I might remember. It will be the last guest-service date for the season at the Kay El Bar Guest Ranch in Arizona.

Thursday, March 5

Most Thursdays, as of late, is the day that the head chef takes off. So that means that I work all day. It starts around 5:30 am. I run… Continue

True Friends Leave Footprints in Your Heart!

As excited as I am to be leaving Florida to travel West, to explore new places, hike more trails, and meet new friends, it is the friends I leave behind that make starting this journey so hard. The footprints in my heart are forged by friends so varied. Some acquaintances leave only a slight indentation, as in shallow dry sand, but those trodden by coworkers, hiking partners, neighbors, and lovers are forged in the mud of adversity and in love. These… Continue

When Does “Some” become an Obsession?

I’m almost finished packing up the RV to get on the road. Carrying my accommodation with me is going to be a great benefit, but being much smaller quarters then I’m used to required many difficult decisions. To take, or not to take? has been the question applied to everything I own. The big items were easy, places found for them on a “where will it go?” basis: kayak mounted rooftop, and bicycle on a rack behind. Car, not able to be towed, had to be sold. Smaller but needworthy items were… Continue

Yellowstone Canyon

I'm going to be working for The Delaware North Company at their Canyon retail store May through October. I'm sort of ignorant about Yellowstone, as I have never worked or even visited there. Not that I haven't wanted to(I've wanted to since Yogi Bear was stealing picinic baskets on Saturday Mornings). It's just that the oppurtunity never came up. Being a southern boy whose father is a gambler, it seems that the closest my family ever came was Vegas. Recently, though I have discovered the… Continue
