A Once a Year Opportunity - Spring Biking in Yellowstone

The snow plow crews begin peeling back the snow from Mammoth on the first Monday after the first Sunday in March every year. It takes weeks for them to get the park opened. But once the roads are in decent shape from Mammoth to West Yellowstone they will open them to bicycle traffic, on weekends, for a few weeks before the roads open to cars for the season. During the week there is a lot of maintenance and construction traffic out there as folks scurry around to get the park ready to open. But… Continue

Yes, I Know, Yellowstone is on Top of a Volcano!

(My most recent blog post at http://yellowstonedreaming.blogspot.com)

Let's get a few things out of the way before we discuss the caldera problem.

Yellowstone is not in Arizona, California, Colorado, or Detroit. Still

not sure where it is? Like my mother used to say, you'll never learn

unless you look it up yourself. May I suggest wikipedia.org for the… Continue

Visitors Coming

Don't you just love when a friend, or family member comes to see you at the great places you work at. When you work hard and put up with all the discomforts of living away from home. Missing out on the birthdays, holidays, summer bar-b-ques ect...

My sister, brother in-law, and niece came to see me for three days. We went for a walk into the snowy timber, went skiing, had dinners together, they went swimming. Just lifted my end of season sprits.

Raft Season 2010

This was the first entry in this blog, scroll down to the bottom and read the comments to follow along with me for the season.

Well today will be my 3rd day on the water this season, kinda sad really, I wish the actual number was up higher. Gonna take my second run on the Canyon section of the Big South Fork today. Every river that we guide we have to do a minimum of three trips before we are allowed to take paying customers,… Continue

What do I Need to Bring?

I make lists. Lots of lists. Of course I usually lose them. My children were at Yellowstone last year, so they have told me what to bring, but somehow, I suspect they have left something out. Would the "mature" workers out there let me know the one thing they wish they had dragged along. I will be driving, so have a little more room. I know about shower shoes and that kind of thing. Planning is part of the fun to me.

Please stop by at my blog… Continue

Outdoor Dreams

I often romantically dream about being an Indian, but the reality of it is that Indian (Native American that is) life is very hard for an individual, tribal life is almost a necessity. The skills and labors required to do more than survive are nearly impossible for one man to posess and practice. I can however master some of those skills and mix them into my own personal lifestyle. More than the skills, the waste/not want not philosophy of the Ancient Americans is probably what defines alot of… Continue

Preparing For Yellowstone

Last year when my sons headed to Yellowstone to work for Xanterra, I knew that some how, some way, I would get there too. I've been a health care social worker for many years. I've burned the candle at both ends. As a matter of fact, my ends have met and the candle has fizzled out. So, when the stress level soars, it's time to get away to the great outdoors.

I'm 61 years old and I'm excited about cleaning rooms at the Old Faithful Inn. It will be a relief to do something physical and… Continue

Adjustments

I have been keeping track of Zack Steer's Iditarod run. He's currently 11th a little past the halfway point. Zack and Anjanette own and run Sheep Mountain Lodge, where I worked last summer.

Here he talks about making adjustments to your plans. I think it may cover more than…

Returning to alaska

Got the call to return to Alska for the summer, cooking for a crew of eastern block students, earning money for their school time. I swear last summer I had never seen so many thongs, even in the city, and the girls all dressed like they were going out, some even wore make-up every day, even when they were processing, but I've gotta say it made for great scenery. It's just a shame I won't get to see the Fremont Parade, and summer solstice celebration, as I'm due to leave right before the… Continue

Before you go to Hawaii read this...

Had a bad experience going to Hawaii at my own expense to work as a bus

driver for Polynesian Adventure Tours. After a lot of expense and

trouble getting an apartment and getting settled in I got 40 hours of

paid training OVER A MONTHS TIME(!) then got left out in the pasture to

rot. We were supposed to call in every day so it was not possible to

plan anything and after calling in dutifully every day for a month was

told "You have the day off." each time. This was… Continue
