Yep..We had a bat dive-bombing the customers and the employees at the restaurant last night. It was hilarious! I love this place... too much fun. I hope you all are having as good a season as I am. :0)

Day 2
Good Morning South Dakota! The greatest thing about camping is waking up with the sun. Well, at least I wake up with the sun. Angie still enjoys sleeping in as late as I allow her to. The KOA was a welcoming sight in the morning. The "K"ampground was teeming with National Park employees enjoying a preview day of the grounds and also taking advantage of pancakes, sausage biscuits w/gravy and bacon from the kitchen. We, however, only opted for coffee that…

I was so lucky to hop on one of our company planes and take the hour flight down to fairbanks today. I needed to get some things in town and God blessed me with a awesome day !! I checked into the go north hostel which is very nice. I rented a bike planning to ride to wal mart to get everything I needed. I stopped at the thrift store and found some hiking boots that are still in good conditon for only $10 that saves me at least $70!! I also found a nice pair of columbia light weight pants that…

Today...for the very first time in my 59 year existance...I entered the State of Montana. The first few miles looked very much like northern Wyoming (fancy that) but then things began to change. The vistas became even bigger, and the mountains on the horizon slowly grew until they pierced the clouds and dominated the view. What a spectacle for someone who's home is on a coastal plain that is flatter than a pancake. As we drove up the valley along side the Yellowstone River every bend produced…

After another outstanding day of non-stop, mind bending driving I am settling my weary bones in Cheyenne. I can't believe I am actually in Wyoming! One clue might be the 45 deg temperature outside right now (yep, this Texas boy is freezing his tootoo off ALREADY and the temperature is dropping). When I get to Yellowstone I might just park myself on a stove for a while and thaw out. The upside is the two cases of beer in the back of the truck are getting nicely chilled :-) One of the real joys…

Here I am already a month into the work here at Mt. Rushmore. So far we have had a mixed bag of weather, snow, rain and sunshine. Sometime all in one day. We just about have a full working crew and can settle down for the summer. One or two have washed out already, other's moved into new position. The RV park we stay in, is all but full. The new owner of Xanterra Parks and Resorts have started putting their changes in place. More will be coming as time goes by. Business has been steady. We make…

Let me start off by apologizing to all of you out there that just love Kansas. I am sure there has got to be a lot here to love....I just haven't found anything yet. I'm only planning on being here until mid-day tomorrow so maybe I'll stumble across something in this state that interests me....or not. I have decided that nearly every major road in Wichita is torn up. Its amazing that every exit I needed today was closed due to construction with no detour indicated (I guess out-of-towners just…

Well it seems that over the weekend someone turned on the summer switch here in Downtown Anchorage. The sun has come back with a vengeance, the trees sprouted leaves over night, and all the dang ol' tour buses have returned. It seems like only yesterday it was -35 and pitch dark here, but yet here I am soaking up the mid-morning sun in my office like a happy little lizard.
I have been in Alaska now for just over a year. There is a great deal of pride in that last sentence. And not…

I too am about to step through the looking glass into the world of seasonal summer employment 2009...like so many before me. My visions of great summer adventures are tempered by a realization that I am going there to do a job, which at times may be difficult, and that when I do play there are animals in those woods that could trample me, or worse, eat me. I have tried my best to cover all the bases. If things go well then I have packed nearly every piece of gear or gadget I could possibly need…

I will be spending my summer here in Coldfoot, Alaska just 60 miles north of the arctic cirlce. This being said many people would think very cold. I am happy to report that the weather here is not so bad. The Brooks mountain range protects us from the cold arctic winds. This area is actually considered desert climate in the summer with many sunny days and very little rain. I will be enjoying most days in the 70's with night getting down to 50's or mid 40's . Right now I am in whats called crew…

Sitting in this ridiculously gorgeous lobby at Jackson Lake Lodge - the sun has faded and so, too, the peaks.

It was a very good day, full of the things that brought me back to this Yellowstone-Teton area to stay after misguided attempts, years ago, to find a real job.
Delivered a Cool Works sweatshirt to
Scott at the Old Faithful Inn. Scott's background in the Marines…

The winter I worked in Yellowstone, we had to wait for this bear to pass (March 07) with little protection except a few snowmobiles, a few tourists, and a Ranger's hand gun. We also ran into the bear the next day, except this time we were going the same direction. We had to follow the bear for a while and I was just hoping that he wouldn't feel threatened. We tried to keep our distance, and finally at Pumice Point (I think) we were able to pass him.…

Last week I got paid to hike North Rim to South Rim for my new job. It was an awesome hike with 7 park service interpretive staff that knew practically anything there was to know about the Canyon.
We took four days to cross the Canyon, which is much slower than most people get the opportunity for, but we were stopping at almost every rock laer change, new plant, insect, etc to share knowledge. Stayed at Cottonwood campground on the way down, Phantom Ranch, and Indian Garden on the…

I'm at the Juneau airport right now, waiting for my connecting flight.
I took the bus/light rail system to the Phoenix airport. I wouldn't suggest it to many. It even became a bit long for me. But part of that was hauling my bags with me. I left Wickenburg at 7:50 am and arrived at the airport around 11:30. But it was only $5.50 for the entire trip.
Vegas was fun. Won some, lost some, won more, lost most of that again. But came out about $10 up. I was up over $100 at the…

I left Wisconsin to get on my flight to Alaska I was blessed with a beautifull sunrise. I enjoyed it thinking it will be my last "Wisconsin" sunrise for a while, not realizing that would be my last sunrise for the summer. When I arrived in Fairbanks I was suprised to see the sun still up at midnight. Now at coldfoot I am further north and see the sun fairly bright at 2am. On Junes 21st the sun will never touch the horizon and stay up in the sky. Every…

After seeing all the winter scenes from Wyoming and Montana this past week, I figured it was time to post some warm, high temperature Texas pics! Maybe when I head to Yellowstone on May 20 I can bring some Spring weather with me and thaw things out a bit up there. So checkout my latest photos and see what 92 deg F looks like. Hope these warm y'alls hearts.
