My 1st phone interview for 2015

I had just emailed my resume yesterday (Saturday), so I was a bit surprised to get an unplanned call this morning from Cliff Dwellers Lodge in Northern AZ.

I had just gotten up and made coffee, so I didn't have my resume in front of me, or any list of questions that everyone says you should ask. Luckily it's an area that I have been wanting to explore for many years.

This interview lasted about 10-15 minutes, where the guy mostly told me about the company and wanting to find…

Job Hunting After Seasonal Work

As a some of you know I have worked at Grand Canyon South Rim (GCSR) 3 times. In between my time there I have gone to 2 locations in AK, Phoenix AZ, and back to stay with family in NH.

Before starting work @ GCSR, I have lived for short periods of time in Kingman AZ, UT, CA, NH, TN, KY, & FL.

Now it seems to me that whenever I apply for jobs, the person doing the interview will glance through and then look at me saying you move alot (that happened again today). My last…

Back for the Winter Season at Yellowstone.

I reported back to Yellowstone on December 16th for the winter season. I'm sure many folks were just kidding me about the winters up here, but being from Houston, Texas, I'm sure they were just a little bit serious as well.

So, how am I faring in this winter wonderland? It is fantastic. It's cold, that's for sure, and there's lots of snow, but it is great. In Houston, we used to have at least 15 or 20 minutes of winter every year, so there's that. Driving out to Lamar Valley and…

How has Seasonal Job Changed Your Life?

CoolWorks is currently running a contest to hear from YOU - the loyal CoolWorkers! We want to know how a Seasonal Job - or several of them - has changed your life!

For me - I took "one" Summer Job in Yellowstone, which led to another. Then I took a leap of faith and jumped at a Winter Job in Yellowstone. Another Summer. Another Winter. And boom! I landed a year round position. And so my life beyond the MidWest began.

My seasonal jobs included Housekeeper, Truck Driver,…

Traveling and Teaching

For anyone interested, I think teaching ESL is one of the best non-traditional jobs there is. I was a public school teacher for several years, but left to teach English-as-a-Second-Language teacher for the Spanish speaking players on the Cleveland Indians baseball team, then later had seasonal jobs teaching for the Ringling Bros.Circus and Walt Disney World. However, those aren't the ESL jobs I'm referring to.

You don't have to have a degree in Education to teach ESL. Sometimes you…

Housekeeping - The Seasonal Day Job That Can Change Your Life

You see HOUSEKEEPER Job Posting and you immediately gloss over, thinking "That's so not me." I beg you to stop and take a different look. For many companies, the Housekeeping Staff is the "core entry level pool" from which other positions are filled - same season, future season, or when full-time opportunities arise. Front Desk, Porter, Bell Staff, Driver, Concierge? Who knows!

In the meantime, as a …

Aaaannnnnnnd I'm gone!

Wow. Just wow. This season has flown by. I just noticed I did not post a single thing the entire time except the first piece where I told about my initial impressions. How did I not post anything?

I'll tell you how. I have been having the best time of my life, bar none. I absolutely love it up here and I do not want to leave. Of course, I have to, on October 1st, because my contract is up, but, I did get picked up for the winter season and I will be returning on December 16th till…

A Week in the Life -- Alaska Wildland Adventures

This is my third season with Alaska Wildland Adventures at their Cooper Landing location, the Kenai Riverside Lodge.  It's the center of their three lodges, and the location of all the Sportsfishing activities.  In 2012, I blogged about a day in the life.  My position is the same, and a good day is about the same too.  That one is here: …

Abundantly Blessed

I woke up this morning, finally totally moved into my summer home at Mesa Verde, with this incredible feeling of blessing. I am working in a beautiful place, doing a job I love, with terrific people and I get to do this for the next 6 months. Wow. I am so lucky things worked out this way.  I also think back over the last few years (since leaving my first career in 2009) and have thought of all the incredible adventures I have enjoyed over those years.  How many get to do this? Not many.…

Annnnnnd I'm here!

After a month in a cabin in Missouri, then a month and a half staying at my brothers place in Las Vegas, I have now made my way to Yellowstone National Park. The adventure started when I left Las Vegas the same day as the final confrontation between the Feds and the Rancher in Nevada. Of course, I was caught up in the traffic jam on U.S. 15 going north and we were stopped on the highway for about an hour before the State Police finally got the road at least partially unjammed. Later on they…

End of 2013-14 Winter, Looking Back and Ahead

I'm just about finished with my winter job.  I had decided to stay near home this winter for a couple of reasons.  I've been camping in my sister's basement, throwing a bit of money for rent.  I also managed to beat the seasonal hiring bias and picked up a job at a local Premier Best Western.

First thing I noticed on my return....wages in the service industry have dropped locally.  From what I could determine this happened sometime near the beginning of the recession.

Well I have been back @ GCSR about 3 weeks now. I am working in the snack bar in the remote area of the Desert View Watchtower location....26 miles from the village.

My housing is the best that Xanterra has to offer here. I have my own room & bathroom and share a kitchen & laundry room with 1 other girl. All for about $24.50 a week. I guess they had to bribe people with good housing in order to get people to live in such a remote place. Now as a comparison,  I am spending the…

Leaving the Seasonal Call

My seasonal life is over.

I've accepted a permanent GS/5-2 position with the Corps of Engineers in Arkansas. Hard to believe that it was only two years ago that I left Arkansas' White River NWR,  and now, I'm headed back that direction. Guess I'm not a very good seasonal employee after all.

For those I've made friends with here... God bless you and I'll keep an out... hard to resist that migration call even when you get everything you want.

Looking Forward

I have just under two weeks left of what is quite possibly the last seasonal job I will work.  After about nine years of seasonal work off and on, I have to say, it's been fun, challenging, interesting, educational, and overall life changing in a positive way.  I have coolworks to thank for the majority of the job leads I pursued.  I will miss seasonal work, but I've come to a point in my life where it's time for a different kind of change.

I like to check weather forecasts a lot,…
