It was a nice way to start the day. I heard a car brake up on the road and turned to see a bull moose jump the fence into the pasture. I grabbed Jasper to put her inside because the moose was headed our way. Then the moose saw me and turned to the river. I grabbed the Camcorder and shot this footage of it swimming across the Yellowstone river.
He had to work pretty hard to get across. I would guess he ended up a couple of hundred yards… Continue

I liked working at Pahaska Teepee Resort. Ditto Glacier Park Incorporated.
I have heard good scuttlebutt about Signal Mountain Lodge and Mammoth
Mountain. Anyone know differently?

First, I'd like to thank Bill for inviting me to CoolWorks. I'm very excited to be among people who apparently share many of my own interests. I hope to apply for a season-long position in one of the National Parks for the 2008 year and hope that many of you "seasoned" people will share your ups and downs with me regarding your employment histories. I'm trying to research as much as I can, but you guys have been on the front-lines and can offer a plethura of info that one just can't find at… Continue

I was listening to an episode of This American Life today called Road Trip!
One of the stories was about this guy that travels from dishwashing job to dishwashing job on the Greyhound.
He's written a book called: Dishwasher: One Man's Quest to Wash Dishes in All Fifty States
by Pete Jordan
Here's a short excerpt about the book from Amazon:
For 12 years, Jordan (aka Dishwasher Pete) tramped about the U.S.
washing dishes. Despite… Continue

I thought for my first blog at MyCoolworks I would post a revision of my resume. I've removed most of the personal details here like contacts, phone numbers and salary information. Let me know what you think of it...

We’ve noticed that there are a lot of profiles with the ‘grey
shadow men’ as the profile pic. Our hopeful vision was that MyCoolworks would be
a place where folks could come and share their seasonal lifestyles AND
Everyone would feel comfortable,
we’d all make fun new
friends and learn about cool new places and adventures. And so far most of that
is true!... except the… Continue

I'm hanging out at a local Douglas spot called Louie's when a man sitting next to me started to ask me about fishing. After explaining to him that I had no commercial experience but I dream of fishing for a living (and that I'm trying for a crab-fishing job for the winter), I was offered a position as a crew member. I found out from several friends that the man has an excellent reputation as fair and very capable.... He is willing to teach everything from the basics to driving the… Continue

Many people have a hard time believing that someone would actually live out of a car so I have decided to write about it. The responses I get range from "Bloody Hell!" to "you poor thing" ... it cracks me up :0). It isn't so bad living out of a car (only the endless Alaska sunlight shining through the windows makes it hard to sleep). Sleeping in the car is a great way to put away cash by low cost of living combined with tips. Some new pics are on the way to show the car I live out of.

This is an excerpt of an email a friend sent me this morning - she lives and works in Yellowstone at Mammoth. Made me chuckle and remember a few of my close calls. Thought it was worth a share.
"So last night I head out for a walk and choose the campground thinking I'll avoid the irritable cow elk that are roaming about w/their new calves. I'm just a few minutes up the campground loop minding my own business and out of nowhere! comes this cow elk running at me at FULL SPEED - let me… Continue

Ashea (my girlfriend) and I went for a hike over Mt. Everts, which is the ridge just above Gardiner. While we were eating lunch, a group of bighorn sheep walked right past us. I got this picture with my little point and shoot camera when they were only about 10ft. away.

We have 2 dogs. Sula is a search dog. We were in West Yellowstone over the weekend for a weekend of testing for search dogs from 3 states. My job was to be a victim. I have experience. Sula passed her tracking test (4 hour track) and failed a cadaver search test. She's close. It takes a lot of work but she'll get there.
I broke free on Sunday to celebrate my birthday weekend with arun around the park with MY dog - the World's best friend, Jasper. I don't get into the park… Continue

I just recently returned from Tucson. I went to visit friends and got a taste of what the area has to offer. Now I'm thinking of moving down there in September. Tucson equals a good job, good friends, and opportunity to hike and snowboard. The more I think about it, the more excited I get.
However, prior to the trip, I was contemplating Girdwood, AK. I have a strong pull to get to "the last frontier". The town of Girdwood sounds like a harmonious piece of heaven. I don't know… Continue
