Texas Longings

I've been here over seven months now and am facing another fall/winter. Am wondering how I will do this time. When I arrived, it was 22 degrees below and I knew back home in Texas it was about 50 and sunshine. There is lots of sunshine, but the cold is killing me. LOL.. I guess I'm a whimp after all. I can go tent camping with a kayak, hunt my own fun, clean and cook it, but have problems with the cold. Guess I better stock up on som enew winter duds.. do you know if they make down…

Total Eclipse of the Moon TONIGHT!

Luncar Eclipse

We can watch the eclipse together!

As I stand in the -97 degrees with a wind chill of 8.8 I look to my right and see night's full moon and stars, I look to my left and see the weeks-away sunrise coming with a hint of orange, yellow, white, and baby blue blending into the night sky above. I look back to the right and see an aurora coming alive for one last presentation.

Find out when it will happen in your time zone at…

Rockin' at the South Pole

Well it was an exciting week. Once a month we have a fire drill and this month was our last drill. This was our “Big” Mass Casualties Incident drill (MCI) multiple victims. I am on Team #3 which

is the logistics support for the trauma and fire team. It was pretty

exciting dashing around on a snow mobile pulling victims behind us, carrying

them up the two flights…

Kay El Bar

I've made my decision. I'll be the Second Cook at the Kay El Bar Guest Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona. The title sounds less impressive when you find out there are only two cooks.

I'll be there on the 23rd of September and the gig lasts through the first weekend of May.

My last day at Tamarack is the 12th, and I'll be moving out the next day. Before I head down to Arizona, I'll visit a few friends and family back in Wisconsin. I'm going to take the Empire Builder train from…

i haven't forgotten you guys!

i'm living in a state - the only state - that doesn't have a national park, but that doesn't mean there isn't some recreational stuff around here to take pictures of.

i'm going to get right on that, i really am. right now i've been concentrating on writing and working at a boring 9-5 job, but my eyes are starting to cross, and i need a break. so, photography sounds like a good outlet.

Bottled Water - Stop the Madness

The US is a country in which, almost anywhere, we can turn the tap for clean and safe water that is virtually free. Yet we seem drawn to bottled water - an incredibly expensive way to deliver the stuff, both economically and environmentally. Some thoughts from a current Time magazine article and High Country News:

  • Americans…

Winter employers now recruiting

Hey everybody

We've had a lot of winter employers come back on the site the last couple weeks to recruit for their upcoming season. Lots of ski resorts, satellite businesses in ski resort towns (most of those offer ski passes too) and some Arizona guest ranches that have a long winter season - October - May. So now's the time to snag your winter job. Get it lined out so you can play… Continue

Subject: for all you non-belivers...

For those who don't believe the first signs of the sun are visible, yes it's a long time exposure (67s) and with the naked eye you will only see a little bit brighter horizon in that direction (no colors), but it is visible…

South Pole BBQ - 5 K Race - Oiling Eggs

BBQ in the mechanic garage, having a BBQ indoor isn't the best idea even when the grill is hooked up to the venting system it doesn’t always work when you are continuously opening the lid… but a tournament of horseshoes distracted us from the smoke! May 25th.

South Pole BBQ

“Big Fat Kevin” 5 K race inside the station. BF5K 2nd. Annual Race. It took 24 laps to equal 5K. That was up and down hallways and staircases. As you noticed, each team dressed up. Super heroes,…

Welcome to X,000 feet

Working seasonally in a mountain town, there are some things you have to figure out on your own. Like, can I really drink less here and get drunk faster? Here's a few things employers should mention at orientation.

Welcome to X,000 feet.

* For the first two weeks you will be soooo tired and feel lame that you don't want to hike or go out. Your mundane job seems to take it out of you. You just want to sleep. Just go with it. It will pass.

* Bring Kleenex.… Continue
