Taking A Semester Off, need a job in a beautiful place!

I've recently decided that I am going to take the Spring '09 semester off and stumbled across this website as I started my search for a seasonal job. I need a position that will allow me to start in January after finals are over, but a lot of the positions I've looked at have starting dates in November. I'd love to work somewhere in Colorado! Anyone have any suggestions?

Week Five: Wind Horse, Water Tanks and Tihar

I have successfully navigated the road between Lakeside and Bel’s home on the cycle. Yeshi and Migmar blessed the cycle with a dab of butter and tied a Tibetan prayer scarf around the handlebars. Bel blessed it with a brightly colored strip of cloth that he uses in his healing ceremonies. How can I go wrong? I have named it my Lungta…my wind horse….although it doesn’t go very fast.

When I made my way to Pau Rhichoe’s home this week, Bel’s brother-in-law Kamal went with us to… Continue

Another Winter on it's way

The seasonal employees have left and I am having serious abandoment issues again.... I suppose it is the herd mentality popping up.. you know, the one where everyone is getting ready to go somewhere but you? hmmm.... Accounting is being centralized here and that means that I will soon enter a new world.. where? who knows. I've applied for jobs all over the country, but with the economy being what it is, I think the employers are hiring someone that lives within the area, instead of searching… Continue

Winter work in Healy Alaska

I've worked in Healy(near Denali) for the last two summers now, and after returning home from my last stay. I'm ready to go back for my first winter. I work at the Totem Inn in the summer, but being slower in the winter, and job there now is not possible. So my question to all of you is... Does anyone know of any jobs, I could get for at least the winter in Healy. One of my friends said to try the Coal mine, but I'm not sure if they a looking for anyone, and I wounder what kind of job it could… Continue

Week Four in Nepal - WiFi and Scooters

I am so excited!!! When I came to Nepal this time, I brought a router for Yeshi and Migmar’s computer. After another round of dancing with their IP provider: phone calls, no shows and showing up only to have the power go off…we got the router working. I can now sit in my room with my laptop and access the internet using my wireless connection. I think part of the reason we were able to get it to work is that Yeshi and Migmar’s son Chime has returned from college in India. His field of study was… Continue

Going to the Desert

Since I have not been able to secure a winter position that I want, I have decided to head for the

desert of West Arizona and sit out the winter. I love the fall season here in Southwest Missouri with the maple trees turning the leaves every color of red and yellow that you can think of. In sight of my window now is a maple that is deep reds and rust and in a few more week will be a wonderful tree to behold.

Now I have never lived around or on a desert so this will be a… Continue

The Latest Underappreciated Things

Some time ago, I wrote a blog post of things I feel are underappreciated. Seeing as I love lists, I thought I would do a follow up. Here is a link to the original list.

1. Little Debbie Nutty Bars -- of my gosh, can these things get any better? Peanut Butter, chocolate, wafers, 40% of your daily recommended servings of saturated fats. Also, like Twix, you get 2 bars in a… Continue

End of Season One

I have completed my first seasonal contract and can't wait to go back. The job at Furnace Creek was withdrawn. They are asking for full time employment and I don't want full time. I don't mean 40 hours for a few months, I mean day in and day out for 12 months a year type fulltime. At this time in my life I just want to work for a few months then go do something else some place else. But this has been a summer to remember. I have worked with some wondeful people. People you want as life friend.… Continue

Jack's Gift

We are about to embark on a journey. A journey of soul searching, of adventure, of uncertainties. There are some people in our lives who do not understand. Actually “some” is an understatement. Most people do not understand. They seem excited for us. They ask questions, and seem interested, but they think we are “crazy.” I guess living in an RV, and working seasonally is risky to some. We’ve had a hard time easing our fears, and accepting that we are making the right decision for our life.… Continue

Week Three: Rain, Tibetan Camp Visits, Life and Death

Forgive me in advance for this long winded message.

Did I tell you that it’s been hot here? And humid. I carry a bandanna with me everywhere so I can mop the sweat off of my face. Rhichoe’s home is the worst…tin roof and no cross ventilation of any kind. I sit in his home and feel the sweat running down my back and legs. It usually stays hot like that until a series of gully washers arrive that scrape the landscape clean. They are then followed by cooler temperatures.… Continue
