Dallas Summer On The Wisconsin River

Sorry I'm posting this a little late, but I've been a busy man! After spending the summer back in the Mid-West (which was nostalgic, and only short term) I'm living out in Phoenix, Arizona and I'm working as a contracted guide for 5 different companies. Desert Voyagers (rafting), Just Roughin It (backpacking, hiking, kayaking), Arizona Outback Adventures (mountain biking, hiking, kayaking) 360 Adventures (Canyoneering, Mountain Biking, Hiking), and Hike In Phoenix (hiking). If you like this arti… Continue

Dallas Insight on the seasonal world Part II

I love starting a new seasonal job and meeting all these new people....these new people who will be your friends, family, travel buddies, and maybe even lovers for the rest of this season...and probably your life. Some people have seen WAY more than you have and will be eager to share their experiences with you....and for some this will be their first time away from home and they will be soaking up everything you have to say like a roll of Bounty. You also get the opportunity to live in a place… Continue

Keith Larson Day In...Day Out (or: eh, Tenderloin again)

I just realized my random-date update was a couple of days ago. Me bad. So I'll throw a couple in...maybe a little less details though. Sorry, but I'll through in another date, May 1, it's not so random so I might remember. It will be the last guest-service date for the season at the Kay El Bar Guest Ranch in Arizona. Thursday, March 5 Most Thursdays, as of late, is the day that the head chef takes off. So that means that I work all day. It starts around 5:30 am. I run the morning coffee… Continue

Shelby Who Are You????

You never know when your guardian angel will be there for you so I have to try... Your response will be interesting.. Pay attention to what you read. Here goes: People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid y… Continue

Dallas What I went through to start the seasonal world.....

I've been traveling for almost four years now and it seems that on every journey I take, I meet someone that's brand new to this type of life. I usually try to give that person as many tips as possible and try to make their first time an experience they won't forget. And every time I meet someone like this I think about my first time leaving home and why I really got into doing this. As I've said before my family owned a campground when I was growing up so I was lucky enough to have a childhood… Continue

Dallas A little note with some tips and a big thank you to cool works!

Hi my name is Dallas and I want to start off by saying thank you very much to cool works and all the people who work so hard helping all of us pursue our dreams. I found out about cool works almost 4 years ago and it opened up my eyes to all the things that are possible if you just take your life in your own hands. It is true about what they say about traveling.....a lot of people just wont understand what your doing. Even if your path is so clear to you, it may be next to impossible to convey t… Continue

Dallas Let me tell you about my move to The Big Island, Hawaii

So I’ve got a little tale to tell you and it starts in California…….I was working at Stanford Sierra Conference Center in South Lake Tahoe and the fall season was almost up. I was dating someone at the time and we were discussing where to spend the winter. She almost had me convinced to stay in Tahoe and spend the winter snowboarding until she made the mistake of uttering the word “Hawaii” in too close of range! We talked long and hard about it for a week and finally decided to just buy the tick… Continue

Keith Larson Birthday at the Kay El Bar

I've been waiting for a typical day for "A Day in the Life, Take 2", but I haven't found one. So I'll just grab yesterday, maybe mention a few points, and sometime later make a third take. Let's make it a random date: March 5th. January 7th is my birthday, but I kinda quit doing birthdays years ago. I woke up at 6 am. I don't necessarily wake up then, sometimes earlier sometimes later. Most of my work is scheduled later in the day so usually I wake up whenever. I have a room right on the ranch… Continue

Lea Grand Canyon

I missed the photo contest! I've been really busy with work, school and some freelance stuff and I just forgot to upload my pictures here. Oh well. I'll be going to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this summer - I was going to go to Alaska but a family member has had some serious health problems and I decided I needed to be within driving distance if - Heaven forbid - something major happens and I need to come home. Hopefully that won't happen but better safe than sorry. In any case I'm lookin… Continue

Bill Berg A Stroke of Insight

Watch this video - really. It's remarkable. "Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another." Continue

Tammy W Anxious for summer season!

Funny. I thought it would take several weeks after leaving my job at Grand Canyon South Rim for me to even want to think about what lies ahead. I had already accepted my next assignment, retail associate at Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton NP, before leaving, but I didn't really know much about it except for the stunning images I've seen of the area. But I went ahead and posted a thread asking about working for GTLC, and so far I have heard nothing but positive replies! It sounds like a great p… Continue

Brenda Final leg of the Journey

OLD FAITHFUL- Summer 2006. I finally made it out of Grant Village, Yeahhhhhhh! Orrigionally they had me in Lupine Dorm and that was ok, but I soon moved to what is known as the retirement dorm and actually liked it.I worked in the housekeeping department as a houseperson for the Lodge. When they talk about the onslaught of people comming to see the "old girl"erupt, aka "geyser rush" they weren't sh@#$ about it, lol! There was times it would be so bad and so over bea

Lake Village, well one year I decided to try something a little different, so instead of AMFAC/Xanterra I applied with Hamilton Stores. That season was intriging to say the least.
