As the true end of summer approaches, I want to reflect on what a great summer this has been. The weather in Seattle could not have been better, except that perhaps a bit more rain would have been nice! Funny, I know. Also, I got to do fair amount of traveling, and therefore, met and spent time with some incredible people. Here are a few highlights of the summer of 2009 for me.

Now that the season is winding down, and all our newly made friends are heading back to college, Europe, or Texas, we have some extra bandwidth to play with. I've gotten used to No Internet (or only Town Day internet). I mean, really, I didnt come to Yellowstone to chat online. Still, I've missed the Cool Works networking, youtubbing, general surfing and such.
Now, with just 26 days left to go, and some incredible adventures under my belt, whats next? I've been challenged and rewarded by being…

I am absolutely loving Yellowstone. This amazing place they call Lake has captured my heart. I am now working at the Lake Lodge, cooking and learning about management in the EDR.
Still, it snows absoluely at will, we got 4 inches on the 7th of June. One past employee reported the coldest winter she ever spent was a summer at Yellowstone!
The people are fantastic. We had a great disco party for the employees the day before opening and inspite of my pending drive to Idaho in the early morning, I s…

more or less people are vacationing this year. Yay! I hope that this continues to be the case over the course of the whole summer.

Its Monday morning, and I have 225 miles to go til Gardiner to check in on Tuesday morning. I am stoked to start my first season in Yellowstone. Hopefully, there will be a few moments here and there to log on to CoolWorks and chat, or write a little blog. Thanks to everyone who provided so much encouragement, information, and personal insight. Its going to be great, I feel it in my blood.
The road trip was fine. Staying in Motel 6 or Econo Lodges gave me a treat at the end of 500 miles. Yesterd…

Good for some and maybe not so good for others, there is a plan to increase the connectivity within
Yellowstone National Park, according to the
National Park Service.
"The plan, released Monday, would add a cell tower to the Lake Village area and would allow wireless Internet access for visitors at some developed sites. Historical sites such as the Old Faithful Inn and the Mammoth Hotel would not…

My friend from West Yellowstone told me (she works for Xanterra):
There is a cell phone tower at Old Faithful, another at Grant, one up on Bunsen Peak, and one on Mt. Washburn. Lake Village doesn't currently have cell phone reception. Xanterra has wireless in the dorms, and a comptuer or two for employee use.
Here's what my employer (DNC) said :)
The main dormitory at each location has been wired for WIFI reception. Our computer department will need to get some system information fromyour mac…

Traveling to Yellowstone
Yellowstone is very remote, so it takes some time to travel to the park. There are no big cities nearby.
Please travel to Bozeman, Montana by bus or airplane.
Unless you're a strong swimmer, you will be flying into the U.S. The fastest and easiest way to get to Bozeman, Montana, is to fly all the way, but Bozeman has a small airport and flights can be expensive. Most students choose to fly to a larger city and take the Greyhound Bus to Bozeman. Be aware that bus rides t…

Good thing I am driving. I mean, how do you get all this stuff into two carry-ons?
Ok, I would pay the $15 airline surcharge to get a 50 pound bag of toys to Yellowstone;but the universe has deemed that I do not have to.
A good start:
Passport / Checkbook / Credit Cards / Paper& Envelopes
Laptop w/equipment / Camera w/equipment
Mp3 player / Dvds & CDs / Alarm clock, electric & battery
Sunglasses/ reading glasses
Sunblock
Hats
Backpack, rucksack,hiking poles
Garcia Canister, Bear sp…

Some people call me OCD. I'm not THAT obsessive. Just because everyday I come home from my Real Job, put in an online application, cruise the CoolWorks help wanted now, chat with Seasonal Addicts Anonymous, nightly Mapquest to various National Parks, neglect my cucumber facials, or fail in 40 sit-ups, doesn't mean I am obsessive to the point of compulsive.
I mean, what if these guys won't hire me....maybe reach out some more?? Hey, I can apply til the cows come home.
And anyways, is that a Diso…

Do you bring your laptop for a summer in the park? Yes (again, screw global warming). Getting online is usually an iffy affair. You should, however, keep a journal, and you will need the laptop as a platform for doing that.
These summer-in-the-park experiences (in whichever park) sometimes don't work out, but when they do, they can turn into the central adventure of your life so far, and maybe forever. You will kick yourself in the future for not writing down the details.
