I got to dress up for the holiday and pass out candy canes to kids that were traveling through the park. The picture above was taken in the EDR.
Manager put up a little tree in our gift…Continue
Over the years I haven't seen a whole lot mentioned about Stovepipe Wells. So I figured that while I am here, I would post about the place in case anyone wants to work here in the future.
That is one of the hotel rooms, I stayed in for awhile when I first got to Stovepipe. So if you get a…Continue

Monday I sent off an application to Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley. Within 3 minutes, I had received an email back stating that they wanted to do a phone interview...3 minutes...WOW!!
Well I had my phone interview yesterday and got the retail job. I have to be there on June 25th, for the year-round job. Just hope I don't melt. Yesterday I also got an email from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon asking me to set up a time next week for a phone interview.
I live in the dorm known as "The Gulch". Its up a dirt road passed the Inn..about a mile from the main ranch area. Seeing as I am without a car, I have to wait for the shuttle van to take me to work. The shuttle leaves the ranch about 15 & 45 minutes after the hour.
Unlike some other dorms, none of the dorms here have a community room. So nowhere to hang out and watch TV with your neighbors, no community kitchen...well the general store does have a microwave that you can…Continue

A sea of yellow from "Desert Gold" flowers are everywhere right now. Miles of land that was so bare just a month or so ago has now been colored with pretty flowers. Course tons of people have come to see them too, so we are busy at work here. Not sure how long the…Continue

I have been here for 3 interesting months now.
I started out with a roommate ( and you know how well I love roommates)but a few weeks ago I got to move into my own room. You may or may not know, there is only 1 dorm at this location. Xanterra expects nobody to drink in the dorm but I have seen people do it. Now having everyone living in 1 dorm can be interesting. You see your coworkers often at night and days off. With everyone sharing a kitchen & tv room, it gives a kind of…Continue
Quite a few of you have mentioned before what you consider "essentials" for packing when you go off to different locations, and I don't remember if I had done a packing blog before (no I didn't look before typing this). You would think as many times as I have moved around that it would be easy to do. Well maybe someday if I learn to stop shopping, then packing might become a piece-of-cake. hopefully I can get all this stuff packed so it fits and I don't have any hassle at the airport. For…Continue
Two of my ex-coworkers from GCSR have been at Mt Rushmore for about a month or so now. They talked to someone in a hiring position, named Roy, about me..even gave him my Xanterra I.D.# so he could look me up.
Well I got a quick call early this morning from Roy, asking when I could be there. He said I could arrive tomorrow or wait 2 weeks if I needed. Well I leave June 5th, to work in F&B at Mt Rushmore. I never even sent in an application for the job. I Have no idea when the job…Continue
I had just emailed my resume yesterday (Saturday), so I was a bit surprised to get an unplanned call this morning from Cliff Dwellers Lodge in Northern AZ.
I had just gotten up and made coffee, so I didn't have my resume in front of me, or any list of questions that everyone says you should ask. Luckily it's an area that I have been wanting to explore for many years.
This interview lasted about 10-15 minutes, where the guy mostly told me about the company and wanting to find…Continue
As a some of you know I have worked at Grand Canyon South Rim (GCSR) 3 times. In between my time there I have gone to 2 locations in AK, Phoenix AZ, and back to stay with family in NH.
Before starting work @ GCSR, I have lived for short periods of time in Kingman AZ, UT, CA, NH, TN, KY, & FL.
Now it seems to me that whenever I apply for jobs, the person doing the interview will glance through and then look at me saying you move alot (that happened again today). My last…Continue
Well I have been back @ GCSR about 3 weeks now. I am working in the snack bar in the remote area of the Desert View Watchtower location....26 miles from the village.
My housing is the best that Xanterra has to offer here. I have my own room & bathroom and share a kitchen & laundry room with 1 other girl. All for about $24.50 a week. I guess they had to bribe people with good housing in order to get people to live in such a remote place. Now as a comparison, I am spending the…Continue
I have received an email telling me that I start work on 4/2/2014 at the Desert View Snack Bar @GCSR. Now I have worked at GCSR before, but this Desert View area is 26 miles East of the village where most guests visit. 26 miles away from the post office, library and everything else. There is NO free shuttle that travels out to the watchtower so it's a very isolated spot.
Isolation can be a good thing. Hopefully it means less drama from coworkers & guests. I should have lots of…Continue
Well I handed in my 2-week notice at work last night :) Manager was a bit surprised and co-workers are all asking "why???"
Not sure why everyone is so surprised cuz I have been searching for new jobs for months, so all this should not be new news to anyone...least not anyone who has heard me talk at work or seen my postings on facebook for the last few months.
I will be moving back to Kingman,AZ (3 hrs West of GCSR). This morning Anne, made a comment about Alaska turning me…Continue
I wasn't always crazy about sharing a room with ex's either and
believe me sharing space with any other roomie isn't all that
much different...especially after years of having a room to myself.
I promise to complain about the temp of the room especially if you keep
the windows open and a fan going all night during the cold season...and
"cold season" is whenever I feel cold. So don't be surprised when I get
a space heater and crank it up.
If I am working…Continue
This has been a rather strange Summer for me. I got to experience AK up-close & personal, which is always better then doing it from TV or magazines. I sorta had 2 part-time jobs while I was there. First I worked at Wendy's, which was within walking distance from the hostel I was staying in. I quit that job when the Winter community ended at the hostel and everyone had to move out..to make room for the Summer visitors, that only stay a few days at a time.
I went to Cooper Landing…Continue

Now the first time I got a job @ GCSR(Grand Canyon South Rim...for all you newbies) I had been living in a strangers house with no real job at all, in Tampa,FL. I had been bouncing around from place to place & state to state for awhile. Which was fine with me back then. I usually only stayed somewhere for 2-3 months at a time. Something always came up and I was forced to move on. But moving on so much had it's advantages...you didn't collect alot of stuff and you never got to know…Continue
This picture was taken the 2nd time it came wandering through the property at Gwin's Lodge, since I have been here. It was just after lunch time. The bear came back a 3rd time in the same week, after dinner but unfortunately I did not have the camera with me. Actually a 'fish & game' officer was here then and shot rubber…Continue
Tonight after dinner I went down the road around the corner where the river comes right up to the road. Sat down on the guard-rail for awhile watching…Continue
While I was sitting at the Phoenix airport for my flight to Alaska, I happened to watch quite a few different children use the escalators. It made me wonder..there were very young children who ran right to the escalator and jumped on it by themselves even though some adult was calling to them and telling them to wait. Obviously those kids were in a hurry to get somewhere and laughed all the way to the bottom of their escalator ride. For them it was exciting to be able to do something on…Continue
