Living & Working in Great Places

We've had quite an interesting week here up at Lake Yellowstone. We became surrounded by smoke from the fires, until one afternoon we couldnt even see the sun, and our blue lake appeared brown. The firefighters increased in number and efforts, sprinklers installed around location, even on top cabin roofs. Helicopters, weed cutters, and rangers were kept busy while we debated the possiblity of evacuation. Firefighters were fed at Lake Lodge breakfast and dinner, sack lunches prepared for in the field.

Early this morning mother nature stepped in and sent rain, then snow, and the air is clean again.

This has been a fabulous season! Its hard saying goodbye to all our new friends, epecially the internationals. Maybe we'll see each other again.

Yeah Carol,
Missoula is an awesome town. It is very vibrant with a university there and the wilderness areas are extensive. If you likes Jellystone, you will love Missoula. Cheers :0)

I also hear Missoula is an awesome town. I haven't made it up there yet, but all i hear is how cool of a town it is. And the wilderness area is huge! I'm going to definately go back to NJ for the winter.. but who knows next summer! being in yellowstone this break has given me the itch to apply for a seasonal park ranger position :-)

Fires here started just south of Bridge Bay, lightning strike on Sept 13. For a couple days they just kept an eye on them. Then, as they escalated, and affected the Lake area, seemed they had an OOPsey moment. Very little business, and buildings in jeapordy. It was incredibly dry around here. They said this area wasnt hit in the '88
fires, so alot of dry, downed timber, a regular tinder box.

Jason, I'm looking at the town of Missoula. I've heard great things about it, and the surrounding wilderness areas are inviting.

When and where did the fires start? I am surprised that they are starting this late.... All is good in Anchorage. It has been named #1 in the U.S. for jobs...yeah!... peace to all. :0)

Sorry you can't make it over here, Jason. I'm sorta having second thoughts on wintering here. There's a couple other better ideas floating around, the pay here would only be $7.50, so you have to totally do it for the love. Humm.....right now the love is fading.

What are your winter plans? How did your season go?

hey carol- glad to hear all is well - i was thinking about you and how you were doing over there at the lake with the fire going on. i was in yellowstone today, and will be in yellowstone tomorrow, but unfortunately, i'm on the west side and cant get over to the lake with the road being closed. so you're going to stay in yellowstone for the winter right? where will you be working and what will you be doing?
