The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Part 2)

The Tamarack Resort near Donnelly, Idaho--Winter '06/'07; Summer '07

The Lodge at Osprey Meadows, one of the many places at the resort.

The Good: New resort, always increasing size, and interest. Year-round or seasonal options...year-round has excellent benefit package. Growing reputation, especially in the snowboarding and golfing worlds. Cross section of guests from ski and mountain bike bums to very high end-- Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf are major investors and building a Fairmont Hotel on the resort. Some major activities in the near future...the World Winter Special Olympics and another round of the Grand Prix snowboarders.

The Bad: There a couple of months in the fall when the weather is not great for golf and mountain biking, but not quite ready for skiing and snowboarding. Also the opposite is true in the spring. Like all ski resorts, the business level can be dictated by the weather. There seems to be two levels of activity---dead and busy.

The Ugly: Employees do have plenty of discounts...but that still might be too pricey for some. There is a shuttle system and it is getting better...Employee housing is 6 miles from the resort. This is RURAL Idaho, the nearest city with things like grocery stores is 12 miles away. The roads, while getting a new coat right now, are narrow and can be rough. Employee housing options are nice condos and new, but can become crowded...they are located in an area of non-employees that enjoy their escape to the peaceful country-side...
