Part 3: McMurdo Bay - Ice Breaker& Scott's Cabin

While on R&R the Swedish Ice breaker ship “ODEN” was in McMurdo Bay breaking ice for the cargo vessel to bring our fall supplies. Our Swedish friend Sven who works for Ice Cube use to work on board the ODEN too and was able to arrange a tour for us one afternoon… beautiful ship! Here the ODEN is port at Scott’s Point.

Note the cross on the hill top. We stood on that hill looking down upon the Leopard seal. The mountain range was so beautiful each day with the sun glazing over the snow fields, and the many different colors of the sky. The weather in McMurdo was about 38-50 degrees as you can see by the light jacket I’m wearing!

Below is inside Scott’s Hut, Everything was left by Scott’s men and had been preserved by the cold…. It is very strange to see seal meat, and blubber still in the hut. Disgusting actually to see the frozen blubber melting from the 40 degree weather.

Seal skulls and fins, they also brought lambs from New Zealand, they where still hanging on hooks to be butchered… like I said, very interesting to see all this and how it has been preserved!

The biggest news today, February 19th 2007 is ….. Yesterday February 18th 2007 we had our last flight “out” from pole at 12:50 pm! Yes indeed, yesterday was the official closing of the South Pole, we closed early due to cold weather, and the National Guard! The only ones left now is the winter crew! US! Ahhhhhh

Actually it was a pretty exciting day and to see the last flight take off was something I’ll never be able to explain. The plane with the last of crew members totaling 40 did a very low fly by, as we all jumped up and down waving our arms saying see you in eight months!
