Living & Working in Great Places

Beth Howell

Working in Yellowstone National Park this 2008 season!!!

Everyone,

I am sooooooo excited. I finally applied to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and was hired for the upcoming season. I will be working as a desk clerk/sales agent at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge from April 18 thru October 17. I will be living in the Obsidian Dorm right behind the lodge.

Does anyone have work experience with Xanterra and/or YNP? I have many questions about what to bring, clothes, etc.

While I won't have a laptap of my own, there are computers available to the employees and I plan to upload many pictures of my experience and blog about it every chance I get.

Get back to me if anybody has advise or congrats!

Beth

I have worked in Yellow Stone a couple of times. The first time was for the company that is now Xantara and the second time I worked for the gas stations. I have been a seasonal worker sense I retired about 12 years ago. I find that if you have a good supervisor and good co-workers things go well. If not it can be a bad situation. I never worked at that location but I did eat there on several occasions and the food was very good the last time but very bad the first time. Most EDR's vary a lot from year to year. They do serve a lot of starch. Do you remember dorm food?! Yellow Stone is a very big park and if you want to see it you will need a car or make friends with someone who has one.

Jason S. had an excellent approach to your upcoming Summer. Congrats on deciding to go!
Everybody loves to give advice, but it has been 30 years since I worked in the park at the Lake Hotel.
The work experience the park offered has lasted well over the years, the Lake Hotel kitchen dates to about 1917, so it is an excellent age.
The food I ate was an issue for me when I worked there. I could count on the salad, but the other items were hit and miss.
The town I live in right now has free meal sites, and the trick has been to eat all your food from them. You want to eat a candy bar from the store, or alternate with peanut butter and jelly/honey sandwiches not putting all your diet eggs in one basket. Then you want to eat all from the store instead of the cafeteria(free meal site for me now). It takes a leap of faith of sorts, but it looks like one needs to consider the option of eating everything from the cafeteria, that it is in fact the odd candy bar/sandwich item that is missing the spot. Plus , you are paying for the cafeteria food anyway in most cases. It also seems to me that at least one gal put forth this approach as working, but at 20 years old, I didn't come around to it.

Congrats for joining the Xanterra family. I work for Xanterra at Mt. Rushmore and they are great to their people there. I hope you will have a great experience at Yellowstone this coming up season. :)
