Thoughts on the Summer and the Impending Fall

As Labor Day weekend approaches, I get that sinking feeling that summer is over and winter is just around the corner. I know that really we've still got a few more weeks of summer before the equinox, and there is always the possibility of an Indian summer, but I can feel it in the air. Change is a-comin'.

Last year, it seems that we were everywhere, lots of travel, maybe too much, but we had a lot of fun. Perhaps that's why this year we're taking it easy and staying closer to home. It could also be the kitchen remodel that took over our lives early on in 2008. All in all this has been a good summer and there's a part of me that says bring on the fall because it is full of ten year milestones and other exciting events. First, the milestones:

~ Our first niece on my husband's side just turned 10 years old last week.
~ September 15th is the 10 year anniversary of my husband's job and my move to Gray Line of Alaska.
~ October 3rd is our 10 year wedding anniversary.

Then, I can also look at our upcoming calendar and imagine the roller coaster cranking up and boy are we in for quite a ride. Some upcoming highlights:

~ Both of our birthdays and my first solo photography show.
~ Two weddings in September where for one I am the paid photographer.
~ Our friends winery opening in Walla Walla, WA for Mannina Cellars.
~ My first Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) conference in Anchorage.
~ Our first trip to Yosemite National Park to celebrate my aunt and uncle's 40th wedding anniversary.
~ The 20th annual conference for the Seasonal Human Resources Association (SHRA) in Portland, Oregon.
~ A baby shower for my maid of honor...sometime.

Holy cow and that just takes us to the last weekend of October. Goodness knows what the last two months of the year will bring.

May the last weekend of the true summer season be a good one for all and the upcoming transition to fall a time of reflection and new experiences.

Thanks for the note. This summer was my time to stay close to home, two very bad roommate experiences in one season last year did me in for awhile. But yesterday would have been the day season ended at Denali, so I was feeling a bit left out I guess and trying to find out what my friends did this summer. No luck. I guess they are all busy closing up the park and getting back to their winter lives.
I was so sure I wouldn't miss the seasonal life on the road---but ---!!!!!!!!!
My winter job won't start till January (I'm a teller at the dog track here in Florida) and it ends in May. So this year I just took the summer off Did some flea market selling and worked around the house. But with only one year to social security, I'm thinking I need to go back to Alaska one more time.
I worked 10 years as a tour guide taking seniors to Biloxi, Branson, San Antonio, and Helen, Georgia for Octoberfest. Could have written a book about those days. But I sure did love them.
Best of Luck to you and thank you for keeping things running so smoothly so we can have the experiences of a lifetime.

Hey Keith,

Don's sangiovese rocks. That is our favorite varietal that he makes. His 2004 vintage sold out right away. I'm glad you get to try it and if you're ever in this neck of the woods you should visit Walla Walla. It's such a cute little town and if you like wine, the options are endless.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Looks like you need a good pair of running shoes! I didn't look through all of the photographs, but I really like Hey Dad and Flower Girl. Thanks for the link to the winery. I didn't know you could order wines over the net, but that shouldn't surprise me, I think there isn't much you can't buy. I'm going to try their Sangiovese once I get settled in AZ. Have fun, and good luck with the show!
