Yup, I DID IT!!!!!  I am going to Alaska, with or without a job :) The above ticket is I feel like I should start singing LeeAnn Rhimes' song...I bought a 1-way ticket, on a West-bound Train (well plane in my case). Anyways, I got 6 months to figure out what to do with all my stuff. Probably alot of it with get left on the free table downstairs and a few boxes will be mailed to my daughter in Maine.

Yes, as of lately this is the wildest thing I have done for awhile. It has been years since I had jumped on a bus to move to some unknown city without a job or a real place to live...and I miss those days. So I am jumping back on the "gypsy-wagon" and determined to have a new adventure next year.

Some of the job places in Alaska want face-to-face interviews, I guess they like to hire people that are already in the area. Probably because then they don't have to worry about whether you are going to actually show up for the job. So I plan on staying at the Spenard Hostel in Anchorage when I first get up there....and by the way, that hostel has a 2-day houseparent job also :) and free rent comes with that job...otherwise they charge less then $300/month rent. I plan on saving enough cash to pay for a couple months, just in case the houseparent job is full next April. Otherwise I might check out cheap rooms on craigslist.

But no matter where I end up staying...even if I have to pitch a tent somewhere...I know I will be staying in Alaska next Summer. YEE-HAW!!!!!
I love that song too...Please listen to it!!

That will be a wonderful adventure! Not many people can just take off not knowing the outcome. I am sure as time approaches you will have many more possibilities you could do there. It is a big step to go but your commitment will be rewarding. Alaska is an amazing place. I never worked there yet but did take a couple cruises there out of Seattle and it was great! I myself hope to make it back there again someday but perhaps working a season/s sometime. Keep us informed on your progresses of Alaska. Best wishes always.

Mark :)

I don't have a phone and right now skype ain't working on my laptop. Besides if I can get the part-time job at Spenard Hostel which comes with free rent and a second part-time job as a server at the airport (just found the 2nd job today) then I will be all set...course thats a BIG 'if'. The airport is not a seasonal job...being 1 of the busiest airports in the world its open 24/7/365

As someone who has spent time working in Alaska, there are jobs where you do not have to be there in person.... Denali mostly hires over the phone, and ciri 'alaska 'tourism as well. It all depends on what you are looking for..... Alaska is truly seasonal so many people come from afar and are not there year round.... something great will work out for sure.

I couldn't have said it better. Live life with no regrets and stand by the coices you make. Never look back and wish you would have made a choice that would give you an oppurtunity to enjoy new experiences in life.

some of my co-workers think I am totally crazy for going up to Alaska by myself, and with no $$ saved at the moment. I may be crazy but I bet that next Summer I will have better stories to tell on Facebook then they do :)

You only live once and I'm doing it my way. And on my deathbed, you won't hear me say....geez, I wished I had gone to Alaska when I had the chance.

I am sure you will land a great job in Alaska. Have a safe trip there ok? At least you have just under 6 months to prepare for your journey.I look forward to reading your posts / updates and seeing the great pictures you take while you are in Alaska next summer!
