Living & Working in Great Places

Just a quick note again. I was thinking about making the earlier chat session this evening, but service here didn't finish in time. Maybe the next one...Right now I'm not that interested in Yellowstone so I was in no big hurry. Well, that...and one of the owners and general manager got into a PLAYFUL water fight in the kitchen after the meal.

I did place my first application for the Summer 2009 season. It's with the CIRI Alaska Tourism company. I listed three choices. My first choice is as a WHI Deckhand at the Prince William Sound Glacier Cruises. My second preference was as a Baker at the Seward Windsong Lodge. My final choice was as an Expeditor at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.

This summer will mark my 23rd year working with resort/restaurant services. It will be my fourth summer of seasonal work. It is a 'park' year in my 7-year plan. I have taken some liberties especially with the cruise job.

My main professional experience has been in the kitchen, but since 2004 I have been increasing my guest contact. It started running a cafe before beginning seasonal work. Last summer's work on the Breakfast Buffet at Basin Harbor Club meant a lot of direct guest service. My job at the Kay El Bar this season and over last winter's season demands guest interaction on several levels.

Outside of work I have been baking since I had to stand on a chair to work at a counter, and cooking full meals soon after. I did place Baker as my second choice in part because of the expected tight job market this summer...and I'll be homeless in about 140 days if I don't find anything compatible. But, I'm growing increasingly dissatisfied with jobs that keep me hidden from the public. I'm hoping that my second round of my 7-year plan will have all front of house experiences.

Hey Keith. I worked in Seward, though not at the Windsong, and I worked for CIRI in Talkeetna at the lodge. Both are beautiful places. Prince William Sound is also beautiful, and Whittier is a strange little town. Good luck! You can't go wrong. :)
