6:01pmKari Quaas Hey Again
6:01pmCarol there's a lot of ranches out there looking for seasonal workers
6:01pmStovpipe it started already , its 9pm
6:01pmKari Quaas Chat officially begins now.
6:01pmKari Quaas :)
6:01pmakscootr Hi Kari :)
6:02pmKari Quaas To see the chat larger, please click on the Chat tab.
6:02pmKari Quaas Hi Scott!
6:02pmKari Quaas Our topic tonight is Mom and Pops.
6:02pmKari Quaas My typing is slow this evening.
6:02pmKari Quaas I want to go over the pros and cons of working for the little guy vs. the big corporation.
6:03pmKari Quaas Who has worked for a small employer before?
6:03pmStovpipe small job zone/ work load
6:03pmJason Kemple so Mom and Pop's would be like... the ranches outside of national parks.. or hotels that aren't chain hotels?
6:03pmKari Quaas You got it.
6:03pmJim Webb Hello everyone!!!
6:03pmJason Kemple I would think it would be more personal with your employer.
6:03pmStovpipe or like a gas station right
6:03pmKari Quaas Not the Princess or Aramark type companies, but the ranches, the grocery stores, etc.
6:03pmakscootr Some of my tricks for finding the mom and pops...
6:04pmKari Quaas Camps may play in the mix or restaurants.
6:04pmRobert midkiff has anyone worked at the denali crows nest
6:04pmakscootr Pay attention to the seasonal pattern; they start hiring April to May. Important to have chosen your destination. Many put help-wanted signs up and skip advertising, so you have to be willing to drive and take a chance. Make sure to have $$$ for backup. Local papers, craigslist, chambers of commerce (great local info). PAY ATTENTION to seasonal pattern of hiring, that is key. Friends from Coolworks are a great source of jobs..
6:04pmKari Quaas Go for it akscootr.
6:04pmBrenda smaller company's more personable
6:04pmStovpipe great tips Ak
6:04pmKari Quaas Great tips, akscootr!
6:04pmJim Webb Hey Kari
6:04pmKari Quaas Hi Jim!
6:05pmakscootr smaller places like the Dells or Ozarks... call your friends from coolworks
6:05pmJim Webb I'm halfway there to Skagway AK
6:05pmKari Quaas Personally until joining Cool Works, I had never worked for a small employer. It's different but I like it.
6:05pmJim Webb 1300 miles to go
6:05pmCarol what about housing, do you rent an apartment, stay on-site?
6:05pmakscootr Like Megan for Ozarks... I'll bet she is a great source of info there
6:05pmStovpipe most mom n pops will offer free housing
6:05pmakscootr that depends
6:06pmKari Quaas Like Stovpipe said, depending on the type of employer, housing may be offered.
6:06pmKari Quaas A restaurant will not likely put you up, but a ranch would.
6:06pmakscootr many don't... a person should be very flexible and adaptable
6:06pmakscootr adaptable lets you deal with any fluid situation
6:06pmStovpipe but always when u get an interview just to be safe
6:07pmakscootr many here an Alaska simply camp and save their $$$
6:07pmCarol and are there contracts?
6:07pmCarol camping works.....
6:07pmStovpipe i think carol
6:07pmJason Kemple akscootr - i think that's what i'm gonna do in Montana
6:07pmKari Quaas @Carol - good question
6:07pmakscootr I did. It was great!
6:07pmKari Quaas Probably, but maybe not as formal as a big company.
6:08pmakscootr not always contracts... more like verbal contracts
6:08pmJason Kemple you probably learn a lot more in moms and pops places.
6:08pmKari Quaas I think you'll find that they are more family oriented when they're smaller.
6:08pmJason Kemple about all different aspects.
6:08pmakscootr I have... even helped run the business
6:08pmStovpipe very true Jason
6:08pmKari Quaas @Jason - yeah, "other duties as assigned"
6:08pmakscootr flexibility
6:08pmCarol might you get all the way out there, and they re-neg on promises
6:08pmKari Quaas @Akscootr - How many small operations have you worked with>
6:08pmakscootr happened to me twice
6:09pmJason Kemple lol exactly... but also you probably get the feeling of being a family... so it doesnt bother you to help out with other things.
6:09pmakscootr 6-7
6:09pmJason Kemple and better food i'm sure - home cooked lol!
6:09pmKari Quaas Wow, cool.
6:09pmStovpipe nothing like home cooking mmmmmm "drools"
6:09pmKari Quaas Yep, some of those ranches look really fun.
6:09pmakscootr I have worked for mom and pops more than big companies
6:09pmBrendan Perrin is it harder to get a job with a smaller place bc of smaller employment #s needed
6:09pmakscootr I prefer the closer knit feeling
6:10pmakscootr That is where knowing the timing becomes important
6:10pmKari Quaas @Brendan - Perhaps, but I would guess that if you have a good connection with them, it may work out in your favor.
6:10pmakscootr april - may.... hiring days for the small guy
6:10pmStovpipe I think so brenden cause they want folks with more experience "sigh" I know from first hand a ranch didn't hire from lack of their preferred jobs
6:11pmKari Quaas (hey Rick)
6:11pmRick Peterson hey
6:11pmakscootr Remember after a couple of seasons with Coolworks you will have "connections" EVERYWHERE to call
6:11pmJason Kemple i did this when it came to college classes - i would contact them, either by phone or email and say i was thinking of taking their class - in this case, filling out an application for employment, and ask when they take applications, the hiring process, and a few other questions that shows them that you've done your research. And when its time to send in the application, they will remember your name.
6:12pmakscootr that will help with the small operators
6:12pmKari Quaas Great idea, Jason.
6:12pmStovpipe x2
6:12pmKari Quaas I would also think being persistent would be helpful. Most of these small owners do EVERYTHING. They're quite busy.
6:12pmakscootr check out restaurant and local guides...personal calls will get their attention
6:12pmJason Kemple the smaller places are that for a reason, they like close knit groups. the more you seem interested and knowledgeable, the more they will probably like you.
6:12pmLani Sammons I just took a job with West Glacier Village. This will be my first real seasonal job and they seem kind of small.
6:13pmJason Kemple Lani - congrats! this spring/summer is my first seasonal job too :-)
6:13pmKari Quaas I should know, but West Glacier Village is in Glacier National Park, yes?
6:13pmStovpipe where is that located Lani
6:13pmCarol congrats Lani!
6:13pmakscootr @ Kari...yes, they will be very busy.
6:13pmLani Sammons Just outside. I think one of their 2 hotels is actually inside
6:14pmKari Quaas Cool, congrats!
6:14pmakscootr you'll love it, Lani :)
6:14pmStovpipe cool
6:14pmLani Sammons Thanks
6:14pmKari Quaas Someday, I'll make it there too!
6:14pmLani Sammons I can't wait.
6:14pmLani Sammons They seem very friendly and close knit
6:14pmGary Hi everybody...
6:14pmJason Kemple Kari, let me ask you a question - when it comes to coolworks, do most of the smaller places come to you, or do you go to them?
6:15pmKari Quaas @Jason - Mostly they come to us.
6:15pmakscootr usually are, Lani. That is a great benefit
6:15pmLani Sammons Plus, it paid better than just about anywhere else I applied
6:15pmJason Kemple Ok cool.
6:15pmKari Quaas They usually hear about us from their employees so THANK YOU ALL!
6:15pmKari Quaas Feel free to share the word ;)
6:16pmakscootr I always do :)
6:16pmKari Quaas I know you do.
6:16pmJason Kemple and... maybe if we all live near a seasonal place, take a few minutes to talk to them and let them know about this website in case they dont know already.
6:16pmKari Quaas That would truly be awesome!
6:16pmKari Quaas We've discussed it amongst the CW crew many times about how to reach the employers in the resort towns that support the rest.
6:17pmakscootr when job fairs happen
6:17pmKari Quaas Don't be surprised if we tap you all or have a contest for referrals. :)
6:17pmakscootr but that applies mostly to the big ones, I guess
6:17pmJason Kemple Thats a good idea Kari!
6:17pmRick Peterson Who do you want referred, workers or employers?
6:17pmBrenda hey shoulda done that with me this season lol
6:17pmKari Quaas both
6:18pmKari Quaas In this case though, really the employers.
6:18pmKari Quaas You all know better than we do who the little guys are near where you're working so we appreciate the information.
6:18pmJason Kemple it really is a good idea... i'll keep it in mind.
6:18pmKari Quaas Look for a contest in spring.
6:18pmJason Kemple sweet :-)
6:19pmStovpipe mm dinner
6:19pmKari Quaas So who have you all worked for?
6:19pmKari Quaas Or maybe akscootr - who have you worked for?
6:19pmakscootr Totem Inn..Valdez
6:20pmakscootr Don Jose's/El Pescador in Homer
6:20pmakscootr Pumphouse in Fairbanks
6:20pmKari Quaas I like the Pumphouse.
6:21pmakscootr Watch planes land on the river while enjoying a glass of wine
6:21pmKari Quaas Lovely.
6:21pmakscootr life is good... :)
6:21pmJason Kemple akscootr, which area of AK do you like more? Anchorage, Fairbanks or the islands where Juneau is located?
6:21pmJason Kemple (not sure what that part is called)
6:21pmakscootr Islands
6:21pmakscootr SE Alaksa
6:21pmKari Quaas For those that have found small employer jobs, was it mostly by word of mouth or did you see an ad?
6:21pmakscootr I searched restaurants online and called/sent resumes
6:22pmKari Quaas @Jason - Juneau is actually on the mainland, it's just landlocked (or glacier locked).
6:22pmakscootr tour guides...etc
6:22pmKari Quaas Have you ever applied at a place because you liked it as a consumer?
6:22pmBrenda I worked at Flagg and togwotee and seen them both posted on here
6:22pmJason Kemple ahhhh ok. i was 8 when i went there so i don't really remember, just remember seeing a bunch of islands lol. thanks for the info!
6:22pmakscootr I also like the Wrangell area a lot...
6:23pmKari Quaas ...Ketchikan is on an island
6:23pmakscootr @ Kari... I have been tempted but won't do that because I don't want my favorite place to become a workplace
6:23pmRick Peterson We get a lot of Princess applicants who vacationed with us first
6:23pmJason Kemple is that the place where it always rains lol?
6:23pmakscootr YES :)
6:23pmStovpipe Jason that is Seattle
6:23pmKari Quaas @akscootr - Totally understand.
6:24pmakscootr but ALL Alaska was like that last year
6:24pmKari Quaas @Rick - I know that I used to hand out cards if someone sounded interested in employment. ;)
6:24pmJason Kemple lol... i was talking about ketchikan but i hear seattle is like that too!
6:24pmKari Quaas Ketchikan can have a TON of rain.
6:24pmStovpipe Seattle is worse
6:24pmRick Peterson literally
6:24pmKari Quaas @Stovpipe - ha
6:24pmakscootr @ Jason...the reason I like the SE so much is the friendliness of the people
6:24pmSara B Brenda- did you have a good experience with flagg?
6:24pmKari Quaas Ketchikan gets about 10x the rain that Seattle does.
6:24pmJason Kemple thats a good reason.
6:24pmKari Quaas It's in a rain forest.
6:25pmJason Kemple i went panning for gold in juneau i think.
6:25pmakscootr When asked where I worked I said I wasn't; They started making phone calls for me without me asking
6:25pmRick Peterson One possible advantage of smaller places that even with a slower travel industry, they probably aren't going to eliminate jobs because they run a pretty streamlined operation full time anyway
6:25pmakscootr same with housing
6:26pmakscootr smaller places can easily equal the income of big places also
6:26pmKari Quaas That's true, Rick.
6:26pmakscootr in fact my best was a bar and grill on Marco Island , Fla
6:26pmakscootr they were not advertising... I just walked in
6:27pmKari Quaas I think another good thing to think about is how many people you want to work with.
6:27pmJason Kemple maybe some smaller places don't want to be advertised on a website like this.
6:27pmakscootr they just put a sigh on the door most often
6:27pmKari Quaas For example, with a smaller place, there isn't a much variety of folks, but you'll get to know them really well.
6:27pmakscootr sign
6:27pmKari Quaas @Jason - I'm sure it's $ too.
6:27pmJason Kemple kari - i agree... which i would think for most people is a plus.
6:27pmakscootr Yeppers .. and they will be there when you go back
6:28pmKari Quaas If you haven't already done so, I completely recommend reading Keith Larson's post "Ketchup on Waffles." It's great.
6:28pmakscootr If you like the place, it is often a local hot spot that is less affected by tourism
6:28pmBrenda it's not as hectic in regards to finding new friends at a smaller place where as a big place sure you'll meet new people but that's a tiny fraction of the people that work there
6:28pmakscootr thus the $$$ variations are less
6:29pmKari Quaas Keith's post -
http://my.coolworks.com/profiles/blogs/ketchup-on-waffles
6:29pmakscootr and you get to know the townspeople
6:30pmKari Quaas What about wages? Do you find that smaller employers pay more or less than the big companies?
6:30pmakscootr I went back to Valdez this summer to visit and many of those I knew had stayed
6:30pmakscootr Usually I make more...
6:30pmGary Where's Valdez??
6:30pmKari Quaas @akscootr - cool
6:31pmBrenda in my experience it's the same but I have heard a lot of people say the smaller pay better
6:31pmKari Quaas Valdez is in Alaska at the to of the Gulf of Alaska.
6:31pmakscootr 300+ road miles from Anchorage
6:31pmKari Quaas It's a port town.
6:31pmakscootr you can get there by ferry also... it is where the pipeline ends
6:31pmStovpipe how about winter mom n pop places
6:31pmKari Quaas It's the terminus of the Alyeska oil pipeline.
6:31pmLani Sammons I worked the summer of 2007 (not seasonal, but temporary) for a mom and pop company in Waikiki and they paid me a ridiculous amount of money.
6:32pmBrenda that's why I like the North rim, yes it's apart of the grand canyon but it's small
6:32pmBrenda remote
6:32pmKari Quaas @stovpipe - I automatically think of ski resort towns and ranches in the south.
6:32pmStovpipe < mioght have a job at north rim :D
6:32pmBrenda and you have a better chance to know everyone
6:32pmakscootr Florida also
6:32pmKari Quaas @Lani - That would be nice to be paid a "ridiculous amount of money."
6:32pmGary Outside Big Bend in Texas are a few smaller jobs and resort in Terlingua, Tx.
6:32pmFr3sh fr3sh checking in
6:32pmakscootr if you like flat land... I tend to miss the mountains after a while
6:32pmKari Quaas Yo Fr#sh
6:32pmStovpipe hey fr3sh what up
6:33pmFr3sh what's up people
6:33pmStovpipe i agree Ak
6:33pmFr3sh kari, i have great news
6:33pmJason Kemple do you guys know if places would be willing to hire mid-season... lets say January - April? whether it be mom&pop or big company?
6:33pmKari Quaas I know that we added a small kayak guiding place in FL this winter and they were psyched to find us.
6:33pmKari Quaas What fresh?
6:33pmFr3sh i accepted the job in ak
6:33pmStovpipe I think they might Jason depending on job availability
6:33pmKari Quaas :)
6:34pmKari Quaas Right on!
6:34pmFr3sh i finally got in contact w/danny
6:34pmStovpipe congrats fr3sh!
6:34pmBrenda some places always have people that quit and get fired and need replacing
6:34pmakscootr congrats ...
6:34pmKari Quaas cool
6:34pmFr3sh thx stov and everyone else
6:34pmJason Kemple ok cool
6:34pmFr3sh i'm so excited
6:34pmFr3sh reginald isn't here?
6:34pmFr3sh guess not
6:35pmBen where in alaska, Fr3sh?
6:35pmFr3sh skagway
6:35pmKari Quaas You'll love Skagway
6:35pmakscootr pretty spot
6:35pmGary What company Fr3sh
6:35pmKari Quaas Jim - you still on here?
6:35pmFr3sh i'm looking forward to it
6:35pmFr3sh princess tours
6:35pmKari Quaas What job did you take?
6:36pmFr3sh luggage handler
6:36pmKari Quaas You'll be buff.
6:36pmGary I applied in skagway with allen marine never heard anything..
6:36pmFr3sh he's interested in me being a luggage truck driver
6:36pmKari Quaas Hey Gary - Give them time. They just got a new applicant tracking system.
6:36pmGary No problem I'm going to NR.
6:36pmakscootr @ Gary...did you try Juneau also... they have a dealership there
6:37pmFr3sh kari, he was impressed w/me working on a cruise ship before
6:37pmKari Quaas North Rim?
6:37pmGary I applied in three locations with allen marine..
6:37pmGary Gran d Canyon NR yes...
6:37pmKari Quaas Cool, fresh. It's a huge business obviously in SE Alaska - the cruise ship part of it.
6:37pmFr3sh true
6:37pmKari Quaas Nice, Gary. It's beautiful there.
6:38pmFr3sh he said the ship prepared me to work at company
6:38pmKari Quaas yep
6:38pmFr3sh so much wont be new to me but the area
6:38pmKari Quaas I love Skagway.
6:38pmStovpipe fr3sh i might have a job down in north rim Az , great chance of getting it :)
6:38pmKari Quaas Check out my pics on here.
6:38pmFr3sh good luck
6:38pmFr3sh will do kari
6:38pmFr3sh im so excited
6:38pmakscootr only saw it from a boat while fishing but awesome area
6:38pmFr3sh but you can't tell just by looking at me though bwahaha
6:39pmKari Quaas hee hee
6:39pmFr3sh so i'll be taking my "vacation" in april
6:39pmFr3sh the entire month
6:39pmKari Quaas Perfect.
6:39pmFr3sh im going to los angeles, atlanta and philly
6:39pmStovpipe < might have to by the bunny ranch on my way to Az hah ha ( evil grn ) lol
6:39pmFr3sh oh, and a cruise to the carribeans
6:39pmKari Quaas Anything else??!?!
6:39pmFr3sh bwahaha
6:39pmFr3sh that should be enough don't you think
6:40pmKari Quaas ;)
6:40pmKari Quaas Any other insight on working for a small employer?
6:40pmKari Quaas Tips?
6:40pmKari Quaas Things to consider?
6:40pmStovpipe bringing ur own ride and gear
6:40pmakscootr for those that like things "just so"
6:41pmKari Quaas Good or bad, akscootr?
6:41pmakscootr remember that mom/pop is more chill, so be prepared to adjust
6:41pmakscootr not bad or good, just different
6:41pmKari Quaas Yeah, I could imagine that the pace may be slower or more relaxed.
6:41pmJason Kemple Also, it will probably be more like living at home than living in a dorm setting... since its more close knit.
6:41pmKari Quaas yep
6:42pmakscootr fine dining is actually detrimental in some cases, like when I was in Red Lodge
6:42pmStovpipe very true
6:42pmKari Quaas What do you mean, akscootr?
6:42pmStovpipe bbq food or just kitchen cooked meals i think
6:42pmakscootr Boston owner came in to a local spot and tried to make it fine dining
6:43pmakscootr went out of business and lost entire crew because the townspeople thought they were stuck up
6:43pmKari Quaas oh no
6:43pmakscootr One has to adjust to the demographics
6:43pmJason Kemple yes definitely
6:43pmKari Quaas Know your audience.
6:43pmStovpipe ditto
6:43pmKari Quaas That applies to so many things.
6:44pmCarol Kitchen Nightmares ala Ramsey
6:44pmakscootr what works for pricess, for example, will not work for Totem Inn
6:44pmKari Quaas right
6:44pmakscootr princess
6:44pmStovpipe princess is prolly more like old faithful
6:44pmJason Kemple probably a feeling of being more valued as an employee as well.
6:45pmKari Quaas I think that totally depends on the employer.
6:45pmakscootr and vice versa... so an employee despite amount of experience should be ready to adjust to a new kind of work atmosphere
6:45pmKari Quaas Hey Keith!
6:45pmKari Quaas Great point, akscootr.
6:45pmKeith Larson I just finished serving dinner
6:45pmKari Quaas I can't tell you how much we wish that everyone has a great experience.
6:45pmFr3sh well people, i am out
6:46pmStovpipe tc fr3sh
6:46pmKari Quaas Bye Fresh
6:46pmFr3sh bye
6:46pmKari Quaas What was on the menu, Keith?
6:46pmKeith Larson Salmon, grilled asparagus, orzo
6:46pmKari Quaas yum
6:46pmakscootr Salmon....droool....
6:46pmJason Kemple wow that sounds good
6:47pmKari Quaas Are you still at Basin Harbor Club for a bit longer?
6:47pmStovpipe < had ravoli mmm
6:47pmKeith Larson I'm back at the Kay El Bar this winter
6:47pmKari Quaas ok
6:47pmKeith Larson One of those mom and pop places
6:47pmKari Quaas How many staff?
6:48pmKeith Larson We cut back a little from our 12 last season
6:48pmKari Quaas How many guest rooms?
6:48pmKeith Larson I think we have 9 but have a couple locals if needed
6:48pmKeith Larson There are 9 rooms in the lodge and 3 cabins
6:49pmKari Quaas nice
6:49pmKeith Larson 24 guests usually top us out but we can fit 30
6:49pmKari Quaas And it's a horse back riding place?
6:49pmKeith Larson Yep, one of the guest (dude) ranches
6:50pmKari Quaas cool
6:50pmCarol I gotta run , its been great, thanks everyone for the info
6:50pmJason Kemple where is it located?
6:50pmakscootr another mom/pop deal... not a lot of staff, so be prepared to be told no if you like a lot of time off
6:50pmKari Quaas Keith and everyone - do you find that you need more years of customer service and experience to work at a smaller employer?
6:50pmJason Kemple goodnight carol!
6:50pmKeith Larson I get to ride one of the horses in a big parade in a week
6:50pmSara hello everyone :)
6:50pmKari Quaas Thanks, Carol, for stopping by.
6:50pmKari Quaas Hi Sara
6:51pmKari Quaas That sounds like fun Keith.
6:51pmSara How is everyone doing today?
6:51pmJason Kemple Keith, where is it located?
6:51pmKeith Larson There are several of us with more, but every season there are newbies
6:51pmakscootr @ Kari... I think that depends totally on the employer. Sometimes yes/ sometimes no
6:51pmKari Quaas Doing great.
6:51pmKeith Larson We're a couple miles outside of Wickenburg AZ in the Sonoran desert
6:52pmKari Quaas @Keith and akscootr - So if you're new to the seasonal world, don't rule out Mom & Pop places.
6:52pmJason Kemple ok, cool!
6:52pmakscootr absolutely not!!!
6:52pmakscootr :)
6:52pmKeith Larson 75 degrees this afternoon...nice winter weather..lol
6:52pmakscootr seek them out for they can and are just as rewarding
6:52pmStovpipe dam 75
6:53pmKari Quaas I want 75 degrees.
6:53pmreggiecohen try -9 right now
6:53pmakscootr We have 05 degrees...;)
6:53pmKari Quaas I'm just happy that the sun is up until 5pm or so.
6:53pmStovpipe < had 40 today
6:53pmSara it felt like summer today when we had 38 in wisconsin
6:53pmKeith Larson I'm thinking of another mom and pop for summer--Sheep Mountain Lodge
6:53pmKari Quaas ha ha
6:54pmakscootr heat wave @ 35 remember?
6:54pmSara haha
6:54pmKeith Larson I'm originally from WI
6:54pmSara B Has anyone had experience with Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch?
6:54pmKari Quaas Sheep Mtn Lodge would be a cool place to work. Glenallen, Alaska?
6:54pmSara What park of WI
6:54pmakscootr @ keith Sheep Mountain Lodge is gorgeous
6:54pmStovpipe < one state over from I d a h o
6:54pmakscootr new trails were made last year
6:54pmSara part
6:55pmKeith Larson It's on the Glenallen but like 75 miles from the city
6:55pmKari Quaas @ Sara B - nope
6:55pmKeith Larson @ Sara-- Neenah and Oshkosh
6:55pmakscootr Glenn Highway...very nice drive
6:55pmKari Quaas I think there is a video on here somewhere about them.
6:55pmreggiecohen its not to far from princess lodge
6:55pmSara oh okay...i live in Sheboygan
6:55pmKeith Larson Watched it after I applied, Kathi made it there
6:56pmakscootr Crazy colors during sunset because of exposed minerals in the mountain
6:56pmKari Quaas Yep, she was on a roll making videos that summer.
6:56pmKeith Larson I have found many midwesterners along my way
