Need some advice from anyone who has wintered at Old Faithful. I put in for a winter position here at Yellowstone and it is looking like I am going to get stuck at Old Faithful. I REALLY wanted to be here at Mammoth but those positions are very few and very very hard to get.

Being trapped at OF for the winter already has me paranoid. No way in, no way out. No vehicle.

I don't ski or snowshoe. I wanted the winter position for the chance to go out to Lamar and view the wildlife. OF is my least favorite part of the park- too crowded, too much concrete and too citified. I went down there three times this summer- to take coworkers who had never been and each time I could not wait to get away from the concrete canyon of Yellowstone.

Who has worked there for a winter? What is there to do down there when you can't get in or out? How much should one bring in the way of personal stuff like laundry soap and toiletries and coffee etc?

Geysers are ok but a geyser gazer I will never be.

Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated. Thinking it might be best to start applying for other positions.

Did I mention I am slightly claustrophobic?

claustrophobic? there is more than enuf room there to get out and breath. It's nothing like summer season. There's very few people around, lots of peace, quiet. Then there's the pub, it seems every one spends a lot of time there during the winter season. Raineir is king of the winter season.

Hi Melissa,  Carol Wellman worked at Yellowstone last winter ... maybe she can give you some feedback.

there is a way out, you can ride the snow coach out and back with the tourist.you can also get around the park in them too. I did it, got to see a downed bison and the wolves that did it at Hayden.            cc skiing is easy, and kinda fun. it also makes the trip from the dorm to work easier and faster.  ya dont need to worry about the concrete, ya wont see much of it all winter.                              the winter olympics is fun, there were some awesome snow sculptures done for it, my favorite was the 8 foot tall toilet. good for a laugh or two.
