Living & Working in Great Places

I complete my season at Sheep Mountain Lodge on September 16. Usually I have a somewhat longer time span between gigs, this one is quick. In the evening, I will take the Alaskan Direct Bus Line route back to Anchorage. I should arrive sometime between 9-10 pm. I’ll have to double check the time later.

This is the second trip that I’ve booked all my hotels through hotwire.com. I’ll be staying overnight in Anchorage at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. The next morning my plane leaves at 10 am. Alaska Airlines 872 flies from Anchorage to Kahului, Maui and arrives around 2 pm. I change planes to Mesa Airlines 1006, doing business as go!, and depart Maui at 4:40 and arrive in Honolulu around 5:15 pm.

I check-in Thursday, September 17 at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. It is right on the beach in Waikiki. I’ll be staying there for two nights, checking out on Saturday. It will be my first trip to the islands.

My next plane leaves Honolulu at 10:30 pm on US Airways 23. It will arrive Sunday morning at 7:30 am in Phoenix Sky Harbor. There I switch planes to Southwest 209, leaving at 1:25 pm and arriving in Las Vegas around 2:30.

This will be my third time visiting Las Vegas. This time I will be staying in downtown at the Golden Nugget. I’ll be there until Tuesday, September 22 when at 1:30 pm I take Southwest 293 back to Phoenix, arriving around 2:45.

Then it’s back to Wickenburg where I’ll be for the season ending in May 2010.

That sounds like a nice adjustment to the plan. ; )

I made one adjustment today. This weekend I found out that we would be able to get done a day earlier, finishing on the 15th. I contacted Alaska Direct Bus Lines and I'll catch the shuttle bus (it's really a passenger van) when they come through in the morning of the 16th. I'll ride all the way to Tok and then return to Anchorage...so I'll travel the entire length of the National Scenic Byway--West Glenn Highway.

Thanks Keith--Head Chef it is! Must be a truly good sign that so many employees return; and another sign of the times that Cool Works is actively searching new companies apparently for an abundance of job candidates? To open up my opportunities I'm going to try to get a CDL with passenger endorsement. I've got a lot of F&B experience as a fine dining server. I've even worked as an assistant kitchen manager and FOH assistant manager. I managed just long enough to learn that my "collaborative" style needed work. "So, maybe we can all just work nicely together to accomplish the impossible in no time flat?" I've even washed a few dishes commercially, too! Even though it was a few years back (OK, a lot of years back) if you wrap all that up with my fantastic spelling ability... VOILA maybe I'll snag a job? Once I get a few solid seasons under my belt, maybe I'll be able to talk my way into the properties I'm excited about, including Kay El Bar Ranch. I really like your attitude and outlook. I'm a fan.

Hi Nancy, I'll be the Head Chef at the Kay El Bar this upcoming season. I'm not sure if you will see a listing this year. It is of course a small place. I think this next season we are looking at a fairly high return rate. For the couple, and I mean couple, of positions open, I think they have several applicants they are already considering. It's one of the reasons why coolworks is actively searching new companies. I've heard good things about Elkhorn, but that was from guests, not employees. In my experience it [guests like, employees like] usually means the same thing.

Wonderful sounding plan, Keith. A bit of warm sand will do you good. Wiggle your toes in the sand at the water's edge for me, OK? Are you working as a wrangler or as a cook in Wickenburg? You're at the Kay El Bar Ranch again? From what I've read, that looks like an outstanding place to work. If they announce openings, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. I like that they strive for authenticity; theirs is more ranch and less "resort." What do you think of Elkhorn Ranch--I noticed that they have just posted openings for winter?
