Thinking about winter at Grand Canyon South Rim? What do you think?

Anyone worked at the South Rim? Heard a few things about it and none were good. What do you think? I hope to hear some good things because I think it would be an awesome job!!!

So I know they are still looking for someone at the front desk, bell man, reservations, housekeeping, and warehouse. I recommend you call HR directly and talk to Steve. Tell him you are very interested. I must tell you though they only pay $8,00 which is CA minimum wage. Don't mention my name. It may only hurt your chances. They sent me an email that said they had filled the position with a qualified candidate. I was sad. I applied for everything at Death Valley. We'll see?

Comment by Brendan on October 13, 2009 at 12:38am: After reading what you lived around at Big Pigeon River, I don't think you'll have any problems at the South Rim. I'm returning to the South Rim soon, so that should be a good sign to anyone who has doubts.

As far as weather....I grew up in Chicago, so I'm used to extremes in weather, so the South Rim's weather doesn't faze me at all. You'll see me walking around in shorts and a lined flannel during the winter. Yes, it gets fairly cold there, and very snowy at times....but to me, that is a good time...heh.

For me the most amazing part of living there is that the Grand Canyon is your back yard. I probably look like a tourist, because when I walk near the rim, I just can't stop staring into the canyon....even after I was there several months.

If you like hiking and endless amazing photographs, you'll love the South Rim. If you enjoy diversity among both co-workers and customers, you'll enjoy the South Rim. The gym membership is very inexpensive (I think it was $40/6 months) with decent hours, which aslo includes use of the comuter lab.

I lived in Victor Hall (except for my last month), and had no problems at all. There is definately some goofy stuff that happens from time to time, but as long as you're not an overly dramatic person and have a somewhat temperate disposition, dorm life, whether you're single or a couple, is normally just fine.

I'm a cook, and will be returning to El Tovar. Speaking of cooking, YES, you can cook in your dorm room, provided you do not use a device with an open heating element. Microwave ovens, as long as not over 600 watts, are welcome. You can even bring your own mini fridge too, as long as it's not too big. If you do receive a job offer, such details will be provided in an e-mail attachment, called the Canyon Informer, which should answer many questions regarding what to bring and what not to bring.

rooms are adequate and vary by dorm bldg but if you are a couple living together it will be Rouzer Hall & has private bathroom...other bldgs have shared bath on the hall

food is not bad but not anything to write home about if you ask me...EDR (employee dining room) not expensive
I ate at Maswik a lot, where empl get 20% discount...can be expensive if you do all the time
there is also a cafe at the General Store (operated by Delaware North)

I can only speak for retail and F & B, both of which cut hrs off-season at certain locations. Yavapai is closed much of the winter.
Maswik & BrightAngel remain open full time & are the busiest spots
