Hi Julia... I hope you get plenty of Salmon in Seward; I will miss the Salmon this summer :)~ because I am going back to Yellowstone, where it all started. March 2010 or 2011 is the likely date for the AT... Hopefully 2010. Hiking the entire trail would be awesome!! I don't think Seward will get much ash from the volcano so it probably will be one of the best spots to be in AK.... Cheers :)

Hey Julia! Sorry I never responded, I too forget about this website quite a bit. Anyhow, I saw that you worked in Seward last summer, and will be returning again. I lost count of how many times I hitched to Seward last season! I worked at Summit Lake Lodge, not too far from Seward, and as of right now am planning on returning for another season. Do you have any plans on travel arrangements this summer? I'm hoping to drive from CA/NV and am looking for someone to join me and help pay gas...split two ways is definetely comparative to a one way ticket. Anyhow, I'm not sure where you're located at right now, but let me know if you're interested! In any case, we'll be neighbors again this summer...Enjoy it!

Hi Julia,

My name is Jackie and I'm a student in Boston, writing a paper for my journalism class about graduates who pursue options different than the typical 9-5 once their undergrad years are up. I saw you were a student looking to take some time off via a search on CoolWorks, and I was wondering if I could interview you about what kinds of jobs you are looking for and why you want to take some time off. We can do a phone interview, or via email, if you were interested. Please message me back or shoot me an email if you would like to participate. Thanks!

No clue. I'm not in Alaska any more. My job didn't work out and I didn't want to be somewhere and "try to make the best of it" So I'm heading to Chicago at this point and trying to figure out what's next.

They pay you $9 an hour for training. It's a two week course. You need to be CPR and First Aid certified, but they train you on that as well.

Did you only apply for those three jobs? I hope you get a job at one of them. If I was you I'd be sending apps to everyone, and ASAP. Just to be on the safe side. I got my job back in January before everyone starting flooding most of these companies with Apps. You're going to have to pump out some really fast or you might not be working in AK this summer.

Good luck

Timothy

What two jobs did you apply for? Did you do your homework on the fishing jobs? When I think about a fishing job, I think of canneries. Even though you can make some killer money doing that, the 16 hours a day that comes with it doesn't appeal to me. Is that the sort of fishing job you’re looking for? If you’re looking to work as a guide instead you’re in luck. I was looking up housing at ketchikandailynews.com and I ran across this add:

Baranof Excursions is looking for full and part-time fishing guides for the summer season. Contact Jay Lloyd at 907-225-4055 or info@exclusivealaska.net

You might get lucky and find a spot for you and your friend here. Guiding fishing boats sounds cool? Better than gutting fish right? If that doesn’t work out check these sites too. http://www.alaska-summer-jobs.com/

As for me, Denali would have been nice, but I would have only been able to work as a trail guide for about 15 hours a week. So I decided to work as a Canopy Guide in Ketchikan. I'll get more hours there, plus I'll be 150 feet in the air playing around on zip lines all day. If I want to do some trail guiding all I have to do is switch out with someone on the ground.

You should check out working as a canopy guide too. Did I give you the link for that? http://www.alaskacanopy.com/ Anyway, I’ll be working there this summer.

Yeah I'm kind'a torn between Denali and Ketchikan. I have a job offer at each.

How many places have you applied to? If you can't get somewhere super early that's okay too. Most places I've applied for said they were flexible with when I could arrive. Mid April, early May, or June 1st.

I was planning on doing a Northbound hike, and you?

You want to hike the AT huh? If you haven't gotten a solid job in AK yet then you should check out http://www.alaskarainforest.com/ They have a Trail Guide job that might interest you. I think it pays $11.50 an hour +tips. If you get the job then let me know. I'm looking to car pool to that part of AK.

I'm also thinking of hiking the AT next year, so lets keep in touch regardless of where you end up working.
