I am actually staying there tonight (April 27th). I am one of the early arrivals. I'll let you know what it's like. I'm sure it'll be nice, it's a Sheraton.
Hiya! It’ll be great to see yah both in the gift shop this year! I’d have to agree with you that the gift shop IS beautiful, by far the most beautiful in the Princess system (in my slightly biased opinion), and it’s all thanks to the dedication and hard work of its staff. Don’t get me wrong, we have a lot of fun, but every single one of the fourteen or so clerks genuinely care about the appearance and atmosphere of the gift shop, and it shows: we’re continually the highest-grossing Princess Alaska gift shop (and one of the best rated) despite that Denali has more, busier, and larger gift shops, and Fairbanks is open year round. It’s a lot of fun, too; the staff is really close-knit and supportive, and you’ll meet people from all over the world every single day. The emphasis is on customer service/making the experience a special one for the customer (“guest”), not on sales, so there’s very little pressure and it’s a very enjoyable experience for everyone. Some days are busy and hectic (especially “ship days”, when we get a fresh train-full of people coming in from the cruise ship), and other days are (sometimes inexplicably) slow and almost dead; sometimes we have so much merchandise we’re pretty sure we’re going to explode and it’s a big challenge trying to get it all in the shop without making the shop seem cluttered, and sometimes (often) we’ve sold out of so much that it’s a stretch to make the same space look even moderately stocked. I don’t think there is any one way to describe the experience there, because there are so many different experiences you’re experiencing, and all of them at once! So, ummm, I’m afraid I’m not much help, but I think (hope) you’ll enjoy it this summer! And sorry it took me so long to reply—I’ve been very, very busy. :-P
I know what you all mean... When I read that you both left LaGande I had to blink and read it again... I am so glad you are going to be in the same lodge. I work ( for just a bit more) at benchwarmers.... Well we have got to get together when ya~all get here... :)

A tie probably isn't going to be mandatory for anything, but might come in handy for you at some point. Occasions I could think of would be dining at one of the finer dining restaurants at a Princess property. Again, not mandatory but migh tbe something you want to have just to make the occasion more special for yourself. I love ties and have about 50 of them, so any excuse I have to wear them I jump at.
I'm from the Anchorage area, and have stayed at a few of the hotels. If you have a question on a specific one maybe I can answer for you.
I saw a comment below on the hostel. I have no idea about that, but most all other hotels on spenard are dives. Just one step up from renting by the hour. Some of them not even a step up. The exceptions to that comment are the barrett (a best western) and the millinium (fancy schmancy hilton-esque type place). Those two hotels are at the very end of spenard, near the airport.
The hotel/motel 6 is decent. And probably one of the cheaper ones. I think it is about $79 a night.
Anyways, if I you want to shoot me some specific questions or something, I will try and answer for you.
No problem, thats what we are on here for right? And the same too you, how cool it must be to go to such an amazing place, and have part of your family there with you to enjoy. I am super jealous!!! Like I said I will shoot you a message after I get up there and let you know how it was. Good luck to the both of you as well this summer. Stay safe, and most of all have fun!
I am headed up to Anchorage this week, and am staying in the Spenard International Hostel. It is a way cheaper than any of the hotels I looked into, and it's close to the airport, and the biggest bar in Anchorage ChilKoot Charlie's which is supposed to be an Anchorage landmark. 50 bucks for a private room, with WiFi and a full kitchen to use. Also close to other attractions and shops. I will shoot you a review next week after I have been there with pictures if you would like. www.AlaskaHostel.org is the website if you want to check it out. I have always picked hostels over hotels when traveling, as they are usually full of people just like me, and it's always a much better time than just staying in a hotel room.
