Hey Christina, Sounds like you have been at this for awhile. I am 59 and laid off from my project managment consulting job. I just heard from friends here in Ohio about this travel and work in seasonal jobs thing and I am reall excitied to get to it. However I am a planner and would like to know more about how you get the job and the place you want to do an go to and then how do you prepare leaving your home. Is there a place to get info or a book I can read about this?
hi christina,, gonna be first timer soon, i see you work in park service, ranger and alll. that's really something i've always wanted to do, are there any special training you may have to have to even apply for work in the park... thanks any info is good, take any advice
Hi there Christina! Anxious to read your wrap up to your Maine,PEI,Nova Scotia adventure. Going up there is definitely on my to do list. Now that you know what you know, is there a specific location or resort(s) that you would recommend? Are there seasonal NPS jobs I ought to be looking for? Richard
Hi Christina, It's been a very long time ago that I was in NS and PEI. I was camping at the time, and I remember a camp ground right up the beach from the biggest beach in PEI. And the only place I remember very well in N.S. was a little town called spring hill. Wish I could be of more help. But, don't forget about the church suppers on Fri. nights on the island. Have fun....
I hope you are enjoying the Lobster in Maine. That's one of the reasons I applied to Acadia. I have been in Maine a few times and loved it. also went to PEI and Nova Scotia and spent a couple weeks. Let me just say, you will absolutly love it! Try the chruch suppers on a Friday night on PEI, they are deliciouse. have fun....
Hi Cristina,
I have been living in Sarasota, Fl. for two years now and am beginning to look into seasonal work. Maybe when you are here this winter we could get together and chat. Have a good summer.
Janet
Thank you for the info on pros and cons. I am getting very excited about it all! I leave in a few days... And yes, I think I have packed to much stuff!
Have a great summer and please do keep in touch. My email is suedancey@aol.com. I'm taking my very lousy computer with me and just hope I will be able to use it but there are community computers there anyway so will get back to you whenever possible.
hey, i hear you worked at Shenandoah for a short time, could you tell me what the dorms are like? And maybe your experiences, also what job did you have? Think this would be a good place for a first time 20 year old season worker?
Hi Christina, I just got a job at old faithful inn and i am to be there in may, was wonderding if you know what the dorms are like, and what to expect the whether to be like. My name is Kathy and i am from Az and Iworked last year at Mt Rainer and i am looking forward to work At Yellowstone this sunner.
Hey Christina...Im heading up to East Glacier for the summer, do you know if it is possible to request a room in the older employee housing before I get up there to check in? I would really like to get at least a little sleep each night ;-) i hear the regular housing has younger staff & some noise issues
I've landed a seasonal NPS Interpretive Ranger Job at St. Mary's area of Glacier Park. After 5 summers at Crater Lake National Park it was time for a change.
Any insight from a Glacier Veteran like you, would be helpful.
Hi Christina: I had a phone interview for a seasonal park aide/interpretive services person for Humboldt NP. The interview seemed to go well but I'm thinking they've got to have piles of applications and I probably don't have a chance in...heaven! lol I also thought that I might sorta be on a shorter list since they did call and set up this interview. I'd LOVE this job, but if not, I'll find something else I'm sure.
How long is your work year if you are seasonal at Yellowstone. You probably dealt with me 2 or was it 3 summers ago at the west entrance. I was the jerk with no current proof of insurance for my Ford Ranger and no cash to pay the entrance fee. I was working at OF for the summer.
I do have what looks like an offer at Kings Canyon, not NPS though. Take care, Jim
Denali does have it's drawbacks but as a server the money can't be beat. The guy I live with will be at Yellowstone this year. He was there for a month last year till they found out he had a 30 year old warrant out for him in Pennsylvania so when he had to leave property he got that straightened out and worked in West Yellowstone for about a month then came home. So he's going to try it again. I was hired by Delaware North but when I spoke to the girl she said the money wasn't very good. I'd like to see the park, but need more money this year as I turn 62 this year and plan on collecting social security. So I won't be able to make the big bucks after this year. That will leave me time enough to see Yellowstone when I can pay the bills here from SSI and just use what I make for play money.
Some of the drawbacks of working in Denali are the housing with seperate bath house outside and quite a way from your room. A lot of rain and cold. Very damp cold. And of course the hill that I have to climb to get to work. It's 250 or so miles to Anchorage and 125 to Fairbanks. Of course it's in the middle of nowhere but we manage to make our own fun with nightly card games or scrabble games etc. There are about 900-1200 of us that work there so there's always someone to talk to and we have a good time. Please keep in touch. Do you work in Venice?
Christina
Sorry, I just read your note from Dec 8. Don't come to the site often. Summer of 2008 I made the huge mistake of staying home to work year round at my winter job at Derby Lane dog track. Got laid off in May and was out of work all the rest of theyear. They called me back to work the 1st of January and laid me off again Jan 9th. So won't make that mistake again. Have been accepted for the summer at Denali McKinley Chalet. Have to be there May 9th. How about you where will you be going? Alaska is beautiful, if a bit cool in the summer. Will be happy to answer any questions about Alaska. Hope to hear from you. Sue

Hi Christina and the "Older and Bolder" group. This is my first time EVER to jump into a chat room. This is also my first year to begin looking into locating a summer job. I would love to work in or around the Yellowstone area. What was your first step into getting your job there?

Are you pursuing the active lifestyle that you finally realized you are so passionate about? Did you decide to shake the dust off your life and are now starting your “second act” by actively embracing the sort of new experiences you would never have considered, even when you were younger? Have you made your dreams of getting the most out of your life a reality?
If you are a healthy and active “Baby Boomer” (45-65) individual/couple who has recently made a conscious decision to take positive steps towards reinventing your life, then we are looking for you!

Here ya go. Not as young as I once was. My favorite place is RMNP and the Estes Park area. I want to get back out to the mountains before I get too much older. My kids are grown and gone so there's really no excuse not to. My wife loves the mountains too.
