Hey JD- It's the 18th so I'm almost positive you are on your way north. I just returned from a 10 day roadtrip to California. I was mainly in the bay area. It was so nice camping on the ocean. I don't believe I could ever tire of the sound from the waves breaking. It was so incredibly hot. 80 degrees plus. Some days were closer to 90. I went to a sand dollar beach that was also optional clothing. As brave as I would be was topless. Now I am paying for one of the worst sunburns in one of the most sensitive parts of my body. YEAH!!! It was worth it. California is a gorgeous state. We did a little hiking in the Redwoods. Camped by the ocean for a few nights. Ate at great off the beaten path restaurants. Met good people. Gambled and stayed in Tahoe (the lake was freezing cold, but I can say I was in it). We decided not to venture into San Fran, but we did drive over the Bay Bridge coming back home. San Fransisco is a disaster. They build everything so close together all I could see was the destruction pictures from the next big quake. Have you been? No offense if San Fransisco is your favorite city because I didn't actually experience it. But next year when I go back to Cali, I am definitely hanging out in the city. Haight, Alkatraz, Pier 39.......must sees. So was it snowing in the twin cities when you were there? I think Minnesota is officially in spring now. Grand Targhee still has lots and lots of snow left. But the valley is looking much more green. Now softball practice will start. Can't wait!!! Oh yeah, I'll throw up some pics from the bay area if you care to check them out. Let me know when you get a new number. I hope your trip is going well. Take care and I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
I hope the end of the season is wrapping up as well for you as it is for me. It has really slowed down here at Grand Targhee. There is a lot to be done in the off season, so hours won't be an issue. I am traveling to California in mid-May for two weeks, and that will be epic. I haven't been to Cali since I was two, so I have no memory of it. A few things I'm planning is camping in the Redwoods, rappelling off 500 foot cliffs to get to private beaches to search for abalony shells, camping at Lake Tahoe, spending some quality time in Half Moon Bay......the itinerary is still in the works. I'm really excited to see San Fransisco. But quite honestly, I can't even fathom what California will be like. The talk is exciting. I drove to Idaho Falls the other day for the first time. It's the farthest I've been west in a long time. The city is ugly, but they have a great Barnes and Noble in town. I found quite a few books I had been looking for. Very exciting! I went to Sports Authority and bought a new dart board and dart parts, a softball glove and a bag of softballs. This summer I would like to get on a local co-ed league. I've never been the athletic type, but I would like to be. Plus, co-ed should be a more fun and a little less competitive. Soccer is another sport that I have never played, but I'm going to try to learn this summer. Oh the plans..... I'm working for another half hour or so. I've been here since 8 am and I'm ready to get back home and play some catch. Pool might be a good idea tonight too. I wondered if you were still in CO or if your journey has brought you back to KS. I'm so excited for you and your Alaskan adventure. If you are in Steamboat next winter, you are not too far from here. You should come visit and get a taste of the Tetons. If the snow is like this year, the trip will definitely be worth it. Plus, you know you have a place to stay while you are in town. But, I'll keep in touch with you until then. I want to hear all about Alaska. Later JD!!!
Hey JD- I had a mad time in Jackson, WY the last two days. It was surreal. A friend and I did EVERYTHING (just about). We went to the Elk Refuge and rode in a horse drawn sleigh around the elk. There were 1500 to 2000 elk in the area. It was great to get video of the bulls sparring. I saw a coyote and a bald eagle while we were there. We checked out a few different restaraunts in town....all of them phenomenal. Sorry to cut this short, but work is calling. I'll write more soon.......
What is this 'settle down' you speak of? JK. Wow, steamboat springs would be fun. I have a couple friends there who absolutely love it. I've only passed through there and it was summer. Have you been there? Yes, Targhee is very small, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It is very easy to meet everyone and get to know the locals. It is a paradise to me. It's that time of year when many people take off for other things. It's sad to say goodbye, but many will return next winter, so that helps. I'm just going to throw it out there, but if you want to actually talk, let me know and I'll give you my digits. No pressure. It was good to hear from you again. Take care and keep dancing!
Well, the EOTO show was alright. It's two am and I am going to bed as soon as this bowl of ice cream is gone. Thank you for you blogspot. I will definitely check it out. It kind of shocks me that Winter Park doesn't have more of a social life, but then again, there could be a lack of social life anywhere. Joke: What do you get when you take 50 sows and 50 bucks and put them in a pen?
A hundred sows and bucks. Too cute!! Sleep good and sweet dreams. I'm excited for my day off tomorrow. I am going riding for a while.
I was just talking today to a friend who is also headed to Alaska in mid-April/May. I believe him and his girlfriend are headed to Homer. I'm so excited for you. Will you be working for the two months while you are in Kansas? I told my boss today that I'll be sticking around for the summer. I have so many old friends in the area. I, too, am excited about hiking, backpacking, "playing with grizzlies" (maybe more taunting..), and enjoying the beauty of this area. Well, I am headed to an Eoto show, so I better get ready. I will write soon.
I'm heading up in April. Early like the 1st. I was planning on meeting with some people who are going to Denali. So you could ride with them if you needed.
hey, sorry I haven't been online for a few days. I'm loving Grand Targhee. It is full of amazing people and experiences. I don't know what I'm doing this summer yet. I ran into one of my old friends from two years ago and he gave me the heads up on who is all in the area that we know. I'm really excited every morning to be living here. I'm excited for you as well. Alaska!!! A dream come true. Fantastic!! Congrats JD!!
Hey what's up? No, I don't know too much about the place aside from what I read up online and what I spoke to Bud about. Right Tikchik is my second choice for sure, it looks like it would be a great place to spend the summer. I am just waiting to hear back from Mountain Sky up in Montana.
I'm at Grand Targhee and loving it. My room mates are fun. I like my job well enough to stick around for the season. No, it's great. The snow hasn't stopped falling since I arrived. There is another storm rolling through tonight. How are you liking the snow there? I hear it's been decent as well.
Wow, the cat came with the place?.....odd. I don't have instant messenger. I should just give you my number and then we could actually talk. Alaska will be so awesome. "North to the future." Saturday is coming fast and it seems surreal. I can hardly wait to be on the open road again.
Well, Woodspur Lodge offered me a job last night, but I had to turn them down. If I had been a little more patient, I would be in CO instead of WY. Honestly, I'm really thrilled about Grand Targhee. How are things for you?
That is so great JD!! If Grand Targhee isn't what I want, then to Winter Park I'll head. I'm leaving the 26th for Wyoming. It'll be a trek, but I'm really excited to hit the road. I'm busy packing and sorting. It's taxing, but worth it. I'm glad your set up is so much better. I'm happy for you!!
no, not yet. I called on Friday and they were still going through applications. However, there is employee housing and a job for me at Grand Targhee. The same job I had originally been offered. I am finalizing all the details right now. So I don't know the exact date I will be starting. But as soon as I do...... Sorry to hear that you didn't get offered the position. I hope the best for you at Winter Park. Did you have a good weekend anyway? Let me know what goes down as far as a job.
