There was one day that i was just like many of the younger crowd that i now read about on this site.Happy with their decisions in life.Happy to be part of something with a much bigger picture.Making a difference in their life and others... At 8:06pm on June 27th, 2008, Linda said…: J & S - My main focus is west - WY, CO, MT. I did apply to Acadia too, had a phone interview with them on Mon. It went well. Again, now I wait. Yellowstone informed me today they've overstaffed and to c/b end of August. Spoke with someone at a lodge in WY today where they are hiring. Good news. Soooo, it's really just a matter of timing I suppose. I'm still working at the cube - my last day is this Tues, 7/1. Perhaps that is driving my frustration b/c I know the familiar "structure" is coming to an end. I just have to remind myself that loosening the structure was part of this entire exercise for me! So I'm not chomping at the bit too hard yet. Yes, beers for patience are quite good!!

There were many times I thought I was not going to be able to swing this thing/whatever it is that I am up to.... but, I finally seem to be in some sort of "motion" here. I have no clue where I am going (ha!), but I know that I am headed for a direction that will suit me much more appropriately than where I sat for so long. It is hard to march to a different beat than the norm - for me anyway, the initial breakaway has been quite interesting, pretty funny actually. Many people just don't get me. But I've come to a point where I am OK with that. It was so great to find this network of people who have either done, are doing or are thinking about doing what I am hoping to do! It makes it real and it makes it a little more comfortable. You guys are so on the mark, I think. You are already ON your journey. It's not just the destination, it's getting there that is a huge part of it. Enjoy it!

I can relate on a pretty tight level, actually! You asked how young at heart I am? Um.... 12? No, I may feel 12 sometimes, but I am old enough to have experienced my fair share of what is all too well known to be the "rat race"... I am 35. No spring chicken, but I've got a few good years left in me!

I have done a few jobs down here since I arrived last October. I was originally hired for a summer contract, Oct-Feb as the housing admin. Normally the last flight out is then but this year, they had an "extended season" and had a plane come in in April, so I took a job as a janitor from Feb to April. I was then offered a position as the, get ready....Vehicle Maintenance Facility Work Order Scheduler, for winter. I know, long title but pretty much means admin.
The jobs go from extremely technical to your run of the mill jobs. If you think of a small remote town, that is us. Jobs range from janitor and dining attendant, to heavy equip operator, to weather forecaster. There is IT, shuttle drivers, and mechanics, just to name a few. Currently there is 125 people down here for winter with our next scheduled flight due in September. For the summer season, the population will grow to over 1000. The weather in the summer can get as high as the low 40s. This winter, thus far, we have had temps drop to below -60 with winchill once or twice, but it seems to hang around -20 most days.
Let me know if you have any more questions! I see by your blog post, that you want to be able to travel. The good thing about here is one, there is no charge for food or housing, so if you have paid off those debts, all your money goes in the bank, and two, when you leave, you can put your return plane ticket towards a ticket to wherever you want to go.
