Living & Working in Great Places
Thanks for being here! The six of us at CoolWorks welcome you and wish you success in finding your Jobs in Great Places®!
Well my fourth year at Mesa Verde is just about in the books so to speak. There is just something about this area of the USA that keeps calling me back. My summer was largely outside the Park exploring various places .... some for the first time and other favorites for a repeat visit. The big difference was I was able to find a friend to share these experiences with .... that was HUGE. It is so much better than doing everything alone. But in four years this was the only year I could…Continue
I have been here for 3 interesting months now.
I started out with a roommate ( and you know how well I love roommates)but a few weeks ago I got to move into my own room. You may or may not know, there is only 1 dorm at this location. Xanterra expects nobody to drink in the dorm but I have seen people do it. Now having everyone living in 1 dorm can be interesting. You see your coworkers often at night and days off. With everyone sharing a kitchen & tv room, it gives a kind of…Continue
I had been cooking for more than 10 years when I first heard of people that would work seasonally. I was a sous chef at a local resort in Wisconsin and was training a cook for the summer. He told me about how he had worked at the Grand Canyon and at Yosemite National Parks, but that summer he had two sisters getting married and his grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary and decided to stay home for the summer.
A couple of years later in 1996, I was surfing the internet and came…
This morning I decided to walk downtown to catch a ferry over to St Ignace. It's the small town on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the northern point of the Mackinac Bridge. There are also ferries that go to the lower peninsula, that town is Mackinaw City. First, I went to the shoreline where Market Street intersects and watched some of the yachts arriving. There…Continue
This summer I am working, living and exploring Mackinac Island, Michigan. Sanders on Mackinac is where I am employed as a Fudge Maker. And people that come to the island eat a LOT of fudge. So much, in fact, tourists are referred to as fudgies.
My housing is a little…Continue

Quite a few of you have mentioned before what you consider "essentials" for packing when you go off to different locations, and I don't remember if I had done a packing blog before (no I didn't look before typing this). You would think as many times as I have moved around that it would be easy to do. Well maybe someday if I learn to stop shopping, then packing might become a piece-of-cake. hopefully I can get all this stuff packed so it fits and I don't have any hassle at the airport. For…Continue
Two of my ex-coworkers from GCSR have been at Mt Rushmore for about a month or so now. They talked to someone in a hiring position, named Roy, about me..even gave him my Xanterra I.D.# so he could look me up.
Well I got a quick call early this morning from Roy, asking when I could be there. He said I could arrive tomorrow or wait 2 weeks if I needed. Well I leave June 5th, to work in F&B at Mt Rushmore. I never even sent in an application for the job. I Have no idea when the job…Continue
Are "Soul Mates" real? Is there someone out there who is that perfect individual that complements you in every imaginable way? A person you feel like you have known your entire life even though you may have just met? A person you simply can't be around too much, because you simply love to be around this person no matter the circumstances be they good or bad? Does everyone get an opportunity to find their "Soul Mate" in this life or is it a rare and precious exception for a very lucky…Continue

I can imagine there are a host of people out there who wish they could take decent photos to put onto a laptop or send to FB or even on here. Many people don't know how to utilize the camera well enough to take decent pictures. We have a photographing editor here who tells me most people who own an SLR HD camera with multiple lenses don't know how to set their ISO range or what it means? Really? Many people, from what we have experienced here, really want to take decent pics and the…Continue

I currently work in Big Bend National Park-Texas where the hiking is epic, the views are incredible but it is warming up for much warmer temps in the summer. I am looking at a host of places up north in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho that offer great hiking, lakes, pristine country, wildlife, fresh alpine air without leaving the lower 48 states.
I looked at the Flaming Gorge area but had read some negative reviews of this location. The area looks amazing to visit but to work here is in…Continue
