Update from Zion

I've been here in Zion for 12 days now. On my two days off, I did several nice hikes and took some footage. A collection of these can be viewed on my channel at youtube. Angels Landing, which was about as hard as I was warned, Weeping Rock, Observation Point worth the climb of 2200 feet, and the three Emerald Pools. The Virgin River is the one constant in all these, a cold rushing river through the valley.…

First Trip Into Denali

On May 20th, the first shuttle buses to the Toklat River in Denali National Park began this season. I happened to have the day off, so I got to go on one. I chose a late morning bus (11 am) because I wanted to check out the visitor's center and bookstore before I went. The buses earlier in the day were full. Mine, well there were 8 passengers.

Do you know that only 30% of the people that visit Denali National Park… Continue

Fire Danger

Hello everyone. How is everyone doing these days? I have a timely question and a discussion. What is everyone doing to help protect their place of employment due to Forest Fires? Or for that matter what about your work units? Seems like there are way to many kitichen fires due to grease spilliage on to the burners, and poof your out of a job. Please be careful an with your campfires when camping in the off time. remember what "Smokey the Bear has allways said, only you can prevent forest fires"… Continue

Springtime in Yellowstone: Sking, Climbing & Biking

My wife and I got married at the chapel at Mammoth Hot Springs, in Yellowstone, 28 years ago this week. We both got our seasonal start in Yellowstone in the 70's, pumping gas for YPSS.

We celebrated with dinner at the Mammoth Dining Room (where we had our reception 28 years ago) with our friends Dave and Nicholas on Friday night. That provided the fuel for the real celebration, when we got up at 4 and left Gardiner at 5 am yesterday to take a… Continue

Working on the ICE part Deux

So I have Just finished my phone interview, and I felt it went it well. The Chef is a very nice person to chat on the phone with at 7 am. The Interview was your basic one, with questions in the range of what does the temp of this need to be at and what does this need to cook for. The standard serve safe questions. Also how do you think you would fit in living at the bottom of the world. Then on to my management style and so forth. But I am happy on how this went, now I am at the stage of… Continue

Why would someone want to work at place nicknamed the ICE?

So I have started the process of landing a gig in the most extreme locale of my life. Antarctica, the real land of the midnight sun and ice. I have already filled out the application, which is your standard form. I heard back from HR very quickly. which is always nice. I was within talks in a two day period. After talking with HR, I was told my info would be sent to the chef and low and behold I heard back the next day! NANA moves pretty fast. They sent me a packet to review of what to look… Continue

Tragedy befalls a newbie...and I'm not even there yet!

Last Friday I was out shopping for some last minute gear and the like. I was about to pull out of a shopping center onto the street and the van in front me decided he was gonna back up. I slammed on the horn but it was too late. Crunch! I saw the corner of my hood raise up and felt my heart sink. My whole summer flashed before my eyes. I got out of the car to have a look and it just got worse. A steady flow of green fluid, a shattered grill and headlight and the hood mangled. The van had a… Continue

Hiking to the Flatiron in the Superstion Mtns. outside of Phx.

Craig and I with the Flatiron looming behind us.

Craig and I with the Flatiron looming behind us.

A month ago my friend Craig stopped at my house in Phoenix on his road trip across the US. His second day there he looked at me and said, “I want to go on a hike, and I don’t care how hard it is.” Well I looked right at him and said “I’ve got just the hike for you.” (with a devilish grin) The next morning we…

We are full time RVers and are tinkering with the idea of working in Alaska for Princess or some other company during the summer season 2011 (not this summer). However, we know nothing about driving there especially when it comes to which route(s) are best, what things to take with us to be extra prepared for such an usual trip, etc. In addition, for those of…

There Aughtta be a Law.

I made some good miles today, in spite of the wind in Kansas, and the $2.50 toll for the privilage of driving on I-70 for 50 miles between Kansas City and Topeka.

But thats not my gripe.

All these religious billboards along the highway,

some saying

"What will you say when you meet Him?"

I mean, it was so windy in Kansas, passing the Invader MotorHome pulling a Hummer, I think…
