The Soul

The soul of a man is a master piece, full of knowledge, experience, and desire, but it is not the only thing with a soul. The soul that I speak of is more than that of the heart of man or the soul that might be mentioned from

behind a pulpit early on a Sunday morning. I am talking about what makes a man

return to painting after years of other obligations, or what makes the wind

tease the grass as it blows through the valley day after day and year after

year, or what makes…

Looking Forward to August (1)

I've been to Yellowstone approximately 12 times and to several other western parks.I always end up talking to some of the employees and I was often impressed at how interesting many of these people are. For years I have thought about applying for work in a national park. Last year, my wife and I tried it; two months housekeeping, not at Yellowstone, at the end of the season. It didn't work out, for several reasons. The major one was a health issue.

So, I'm going to try again. Just me… Continue

T-shirts, Talking Japanese and Please No Haggling--2010 CW 24/7

At midnight I was online at hulu watching a couple episodes of ol' Adam-12 before going to sleep. My rustic cabin is in Healy, Alaska. We have affectionately named our camp "Shantytown." We're not far from the housing that Princess Denali uses for their employees. That's about a quarter of a mile away in distance, but very different in style. Their's looks rather nicely built. Utilitarian in design, college dormlike, and well cared for, almost antiseptic. Our cabins are mainly plywood tents… Continue

7/11..event post...... Daze Gone by, my summer in Kenai Fjords

Well folks this is going to be short, as i just got out of work and survived a 10 hour day.. doing some overtime lately. and I am beat. Summer is flying by literally and I am making sure to take advantage of every moment. I have been super busy and we have been short handed so I have been working longer hours. In any case on my time off I have been enjoying numerous…

Cool Works 7-11 Event Post - Zion National Park

I woke this morning at 8:00. Too Early! I went back to sleep until 9:30. One thing I love about Line Cooking here in Zion is no alarm clocks.

I don't have to be to work until 1 p.m, so I fill my morning with instant coffee in my room, two pieces of fruit we're allowed to take from the EDR each evening, and internet surfing. I also have a book I'm reading.

At 12 noon, I get into my uniform and walk to…

Summer at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

Greets to everyone from the general store at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon from where I am blogging this! After a negative experience last year with a seasonal employer, I picked myself up, dusted myself off, and got back in the saddle again, and have been serving since 5/15 here at the North Rim Lodge. There have been some rocky patches and some challenges, but overall this is proving to be a positive experience for me and I am glad that I am here. I have had the chance to get off the…

summer in stehekin

so far this summer has been good in stehekin. it is a very diverse crowd of employees this season and everyone is doing a awesome job. there is still a lot of snow in the hills so hiking is a bit sketchy, but with the hot weather lately it is melting fast. the river is running good and almost everyone has been on the rafting trip. last night the resort had a band play out on the deck and it was a huge success with just about every local and tourist attending. i would love to write more, but i… Continue
