Just One Sunrise a Year at the South Pole and it happens tomorrow - September 21st!

Things are very busy here as we gear up for sunrise and summer…At the South Pole we only get 11 hours of internet and phone use as we cycle through three satellites just for 11 hours.

The sky is showing pink and orange as if in early morning...Just tonight we sat next to one of our many galley dinning room windows and awed at the horizon. Funny how a sunrise or set at the bottom of the world will take days and weeks while back home it takes minutes and's very nice to know… Continue

South Pole Farmer's Market Aug 31st

Life at South Pole is going well, with little over 10 weeks away from deploying>>>>. We are so excited to see light blue on the horizon which becomes further spread across the sky and brighter and each day getting closer to sunrise. The sun will be rising on Sept. 21.

Sorry that I haven’t been as consistent with writing this past season. Perhaps the novelty is wearing off to some degree, I suppose there are only so many ways and times I can write the sun… Continue

Look for the South Pole Crew on the "Today Show" this Week!

Sunday afternoon at 3pm, and we are still at the South Pole due to weather delays at Pole and McMurdo.

My replacement was delayed by one day to arrive on October 30. The Today Show has been cancelled as they did not make their window of opportunity due to bad weather. The Today Show was to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday to quickly film the Growth Chamber, our…

The Sun is Up at the South Pole

We went without sun from March til September down here. Now the "summer" begins.

We are waiting the arrival of the first passengers, though waiting on their arrival has been painful. We have almost finished the stations Spring “House Mouse” cleaning this past weekend and will do some touch ups the day of their arrival to insure the…

Total Eclipse of the Moon TONIGHT!

Luncar Eclipse

We can watch the eclipse together!

As I stand in the -97 degrees with a wind chill of 8.8 I look to my right and see night's full moon and stars, I look to my left and see the weeks-away sunrise coming with a hint of orange, yellow, white, and baby blue blending into the night sky above. I look back to the right and see an aurora coming alive for one last presentation.

Find out when it will happen in your time zone at…

Rockin' at the South Pole

Well it was an exciting week. Once a month we have a fire drill and this month was our last drill. This was our “Big” Mass Casualties Incident drill (MCI) multiple victims. I am on Team #3 which

is the logistics support for the trauma and fire team. It was pretty

exciting dashing around on a snow mobile pulling victims behind us, carrying

them up the two flights…

Subject: for all you non-belivers...

For those who don't believe the first signs of the sun are visible, yes it's a long time exposure (67s) and with the naked eye you will only see a little bit brighter horizon in that direction (no colors), but it is visible…

South Pole BBQ - 5 K Race - Oiling Eggs

BBQ in the mechanic garage, having a BBQ indoor isn't the best idea even when the grill is hooked up to the venting system it doesn’t always work when you are continuously opening the lid… but a tournament of horseshoes distracted us from the smoke! May 25th.

South Pole BBQ

“Big Fat Kevin” 5 K race inside the station. BF5K 2nd. Annual Race. It took 24 laps to equal 5K. That was up and down hallways and staircases. As you noticed, each team dressed up. Super heroes,…
