Passengers travelling from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) can now have a new experience as the old and rickety airport cabs are being replaced with new luxury taxis. Around 200 new vehicles are set to replace the 170 aged taxis, within the next month in the first phase of the airport transport service improvement plan.
According to the Air Passengers Transport Service Management Limited (APTSML) responsible for upgrading the taxis, ten new vehicles have already received green number plates and are in operation. “We have received 65 vehicles of various makes which are awaiting the plates,” said APTSML Chairman .
The TIA is developing a new parking lot for the new service at Sinamangal, which can accommodate 300 taxis. In the second phase, 100 taxis will be added, depending on their need and popularity.
In a scheme, 32 drivers will be aided to buy taxis on low interest rates. “Drivers who have been loyal to us for more than 10 years will be selected,” said Chairman. The investment so far is around Rs 400 million, 320 million of which was financed by banks.
