The summer is season is upon!

As the cold of winter fades to spring, as it will to summer. I feel myself readying for my trip north again, as if an inner migratory behavior has come over me.

My winter was cold and dark, filled with spots of warmth. As I feel myself began the thaw, my bags are packed, but I know I will be going over it once more.

This year I shall be spending my third season in Alaska. I have come to find a position within Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge as the Head Chef. As with most that work within the seasonal world we long for wide open spaces. But for myself I try and find the most remote.

And this season I will be working at my most remote to date. The KFGL is a four hour boat ride from Seward, Alaska. It sits on a Native-owned wildlife sanctuary on the edge of a protected lagoon at the foot of Pedersen Glacier.

The total number of persons at one time shall reach the mid fifty’s and that is with staff. Leaving a true remote wildlife experience, unlike your larger parks.

Four months to look into one ’s self, threw the mirror of the natural world. Isolation a medicine for some, a prison for others. Each season is what we make it for are selves. It can be the experience of a life time, or turn into a bitter a taste in your mouth.

I have had the joy of knowing both, it is from this experience that will make us who we are. We are open books, and it is up to us too fill in the pages.

As each day draws closer to my start, I think of the tribe I belong to. And I wish each and all a blessed season, and to make the most of the experience you shall gain.

I'm incredibly jealous-it sounds like you have a prime location! I had hoped to find something a little less commercial than where I am now, but hey, Alaska is still Alaska! Have a good one!

That sounds nice, living out in the mountains in your off time. I know you will enjoy the Tetons! It is a one of a kind place. I believe you will be working under My friend and a great Chef Mike Mayett.

Here is to a great season.

Good post, Franklin, I like your analogy of isolation: a medicine or prison.

I look forward to Grand Tetons for the social aspects as well as the other perks of scenery and desirable job. Living way out in the mountains of Georgia, my town day is once a week. Otherwise, the closest neighbor is half a mile away.

Have fun in Alaska. Sounds marvelous.

A social network for those who want to compare and share their work and life experiences in great places.
